UTICA, NY –
Fanny Aneborn (Linkoping, Sweden/Lulea HF Sweden) netted the game-tying goal with under a minute left in regulation, and
Drew Kopek (Rome/Syracuse Valley Eagles U19) scored the game winner 1:40 into overtime, as the Cortland women's hockey team knocked off nationally 13th-ranked Colby by a 2-1 scoreline at the Utica University Kick Off Tournament on Saturday evening.
Cortland improves to 5-5-1 on the year, while Colby drops to 4-2-0 with the defeat. The Red Dragons will face Wilkes in the championship game tomorrow at 4 p.m. The Colonels knocked off host Utica in the first game earlier in the day.
Aneborn's goal was her fourth of the season for Cortland, and second straight game with a goal. Kopek's tally was her first goal of the season for the Red Dragons.
Kira Cook (Lake Ronkonkoma/Northwood School) provided two assists, while
Katie Mahoney (Toronto, ON/Toronto Leaside Junior) and
Carlen Bertrand (Timmins, ON/MCLA) each chipped in an assist.
Eline Gillodes (La Saulce, France/Kents Hill) made 34 saves in goal for her fifth win of the season.
Morgan Raymond (Kirkwood/Syracuse Valley Eagles 19UAA) went 11-and-5 on faceoffs to lead Cortland.
Lulu Gray scored the lone goal for Colby, with Breanna Studley and Courtney Schumacher registering an assist apiece. Gray also won 9-of-15 faceoffs to lead Colby. Ally Martiniello stopped 10 shots in goal for the Mules.
The first period was scoreless, with Colby holding an 8-2 edge in shots on goal and both goalies stopping all of the shots on target. The Mules had the only power-play of the period after a tripping penalty on the Red Dragons with under five minutes left in the frame, but the Cortland defense prevented Colby from registering a shot on goal during the penalty kill.
The Mules took the lead just over seven minutes into the second period, as Gray found herself alone in front of the Cortland net, and Schumacher made a perfect pass from the left side to the right post, and Gray tapped the puck in for the goal.
Martiniello made five more saves in the frame to help Colby maintain its lead into the second intermission, but Gillodes also made 15 saves in the second period to keep the Red Dragons within striking distance.
Midway through the second period, Cortland committed its second penalty of the game to send Colby on the power play. Gillodes stopped four shots on the penalty kill to keep Cortland within a goal.
With under a minute remaining in the third period, Cortland pulled Gillodes for an extra attacker, leading to scoring the tying goal. Mahoney kept the puck in the Cortland offensive zone down the right side and made a cross-ice feed to Aneborn at the left faceoff circle. Aneborn fired a wrist shot through traffic in front of the Colby goal and past Martiniello.
Cortland netted the game-winning goal in overtime after a strong defensive play down the left side by Cook and Kopek to steal the puck from a Colby forward in the Red Dragons' defensive zone. Bertrand picked up the puck and quickly flipped a backhanded pass to spring Kopek on a breakaway, before Kopek buried a shot between the legs of the Colby goalie to send Cortland to the victory.
