Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Cortland Downs Morrisville, 4-2 on the Road, for Sixth Straight Win

MORRISVILLE, NY – The Cortland women's hockey team stretched its winning streak to six games with a come-from-behind 4-2 victory at Morrisville in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Saturday afternoon.

Cortland improves to 11-5-2 (5-2-1 SUNYAC), while Morrisville drops to 3-16-0 (1-7-0 SUNYAC).

Katie Mahoney (Toronto, ON/Toronto Leaside Junior), Drew Kopek (Rome/Syracuse Valley Eagles U22), Kylie Nolan (Clarence/Nichols Prep U19), and Carlen Bertrand (Timmins, ON/MCLA) each registered a goal for the Red Dragons, while Eline Gillodes (La Saulce, France/Kents Hill) made 15 saves in goal for her 10th victory of the season.

Alexa Spiers and Ella Oakes each netted a goal for the Mustangs, while Sydney Canham made 36 saves in goal for Morrisville.

Cortland had four shots on goal in the opening four minutes of the first period, but Canham stopped all four of the shots to keep the game scoreless.

Oakes gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead 16:11 into the frame, sending the hosts into the intermission with a one-goal advantage despite Cortland holding an 11-5 edge in shots on goal in the period.

Bertrand knotted the game at 1-1 early in the second period, skating to the left from the left point, and firing a wrist shot past Canham to equalize, with Fanny Aneborn (Linkoping, Sweden/Lulea HF Sweden) providing an assist.

After a penalty on the Red Dragons for cross checking six minutes into the period, Morrisville re-gained the lead with a power-play goal, as Spiers slipped a shot past Gillodes from the left faceoff circle.

Just before the midway point of the period, Mahoney netted her 10th goal of the season to make it 2-2, skating through the Morrisville defense and ripping a wrist shot into the top left corner of the net.

Kopek gave Cortland a 3-2 lead in the final minute of the second period with her second goal of the season. Gillian Dinsmore (Gorrie, ON/Saugeen Maitland Lightning) kept the puck in the Red Dragons' offensive zone and Grace Karakas (Duluth, MN/Duluth East) collected the puck along the left wall. Karakas then sent a feed to the slot, where Kopek fired a shot into the corner of the net.

Nolan added her third goal of the season, and third goal in the last four games, to give Cortland a 4-2 lead with 7:15 left in the third period. Hayley Hunter (Pulaski/NAHA19UAAA) won a battle for the puck along the left boards, and Nolan was in a perfect position to collect the puck and fire a low shot past the goaltender for the goal.

After scoring the fourth goal, Cortland's defense allowed just one shot on goal over the final minutes, which Gillodes comfortably saved, to secure the win.
