Peterson Scores Twice, Including OT Winner, in 2-1 Victory at Hartwick

ONEONTA, N.Y. - Tori Peterson (Whitney Point) scored her second goal of the game 1:07 into overtime to lift nationally 10th-ranked Cortland past host Hartwick, 2-1, in non-league field hockey action.

Cortland (10-1) is 4-0 in overtime games this season. Peterson has scored the game-winning goal in three of those contests, and six of her team-high eight goals this fall have been game winners.

Cortland outshot Hartwick, 35-6, and had a 14-5 advantage in penalty corners, but it was the Hawks (7-5) who led 1-0 at halftime behind a Kayla Kinkel goal 8:46 into the game. Hope Angioletti's long pass found Kinkel wide open in front of the cage, and Kinkel was able to dribble right to find shooting space to score the goal.

Cortland goalie Sofia Cannistraci (Guilderland) finished the game with one save, which came in the first quarter, and both Kaylee Hughen (Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Boonton) and Lillian Morse (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) registered first-half defensive saves, to keep the Red Dragons' deficit at one.

Cortland tied the game just 33 seconds into the third quarter. Olivia Specht (Baldwin), off a restart, dribbled down the right side toward the end line and sent a cross to Peterson at the left post for the tap-in.

The game remained tied through regulation. Early in overtime, Cortland earned a penalty corner, and the ensuing play resulted in two shots that were saved by Hartwick goalie Ava Reynolds, who finished with 22 saves. Peterson, however, fought Reynolds for the ball after the second save, gained control, and dribbled around Reynolds to create an opening for the winning point-blank shot.

Cortland returns to Oneonta on Saturday to face SUNY Oneonta at 11 a.m. in a SUNYAC matchup.
