Cortland Skates to 1-1 Tie Against Hamilton

CORTLAND, NY – The Cortland women's hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie against Hamilton in non-conference action on Tuesday evening at Alumni Arena. Cortland is now 12-5-4 on the year, while Hamilton is 11-6-5.

Katie Diem scored the lone Cortland goal, her fourth goal of the season, while Carlen Bertrand (Timmins, ON/MCLA) provided an assist. Eline Gillodes (La Saulce, France/Kents Hill) made 31 saves in goal for the Red Dragons. Kylie Nolan (Clarence/Nichols Prep 19U) went 13-and-1 on faceoffs in the game for Cortland.

Teagan Brown stopped 28 shots in goal for the Continentals, while Grace Puskar scored Hamilton's goal.

Just over a minute into the contest, Hamilton committed the first penalty to put the Red Dragons on the power play. Cortland had a pair of solid chances with the extra man, but Brown made a solid save on one shot and another shot whizzed just wide of the post.

Cortland got on the board first shot after the midway point of the period. A Hamilton player attempted to clear the puck out of the Cortland offensive zone, but Bertrand stepped up into the play and chipped a pass off the right wall to Diem. Diem skated to the net and below the goal line, then banked the puck off the back of Brown's pad and over the goal line.

Cortland carried the 1-0 lead into the intermission, with the teams tied with 9 shots each in the period.

Cortland's best chance to double its lead came four minutes into the second period, as Drew Kopek (Rome/Syracuse Valley Eagles U19) fed Grace Karakas (Duluth, MN/Duluth East) on a 2-on-1 break, but Brown came up with a tremendous save to deny Karakas at close range.

Cortland was able to successfully kill off a cross checking penalty near the end of the second period, without allowing Hamilton to register a shot on goal on the power play, to maintain the one-goal advantage into the second intermission.

With just over eight minutes to go in the third period, the Continentals were able to equalize. A pair of Cortland defenders collided in the Cortland defensive zone and the puck eventually made its way to Puskar just above the left faceoff circle. Puskar's shot snuck past Gillodes to tie the game at 1-1.

With 1:03 left in the period, Gillodes came up with a flashy glove save to deny a potential go-ahead goal by Katie Allen at the right post. Gillodes also made another strong save in the final minute to send the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, Gillodes was called on to make four saves and keep the game tied. With only 27 seconds left, Hamilton committed a tripping penalty to put the Red Dragons on a power play for the remainder of the period, but Cortland could not find a winning goal in the closing seconds.
