Cortland Surges Past Fredonia Early for 20th Victory

FREDONIA, N.Y. - Isaiah Austin (Albany) and Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley) combined for 28 of their 44 points in the first half to help Cortland take a 20-point halftime lead and the Red Dragons defeated host Fredonia, 89-66, in a SUNYAC men's basketball matchup.

With the win, Cortland (20-4, 16-1 SUNYAC) won its 12th straight game and secured the outright SUNYAC regular-season title. The Red Dragons had already clinched the league's top seed last weekend. In addition, Cortland reached the 20-win mark for the first time since the 2015-16 season.

Austin finished with 25 points, 11 in the first half, and Coston scored 17 of his 19 points in the opening 20 minutes. Austin made 5-of-11 3-pointers in the game. Coston, coming off being named the Division III National Player of the Week last week, finished 7-of-11 from the floor, with two 3-pointers, and added 11 rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

Nolan Raymond (Queens Village/Vermont Academy) made all seven of his free throws and finished with 14 points. Xavier Leveille (Blauvelt/Tappan Zee) connected on 5-of-8 shots, including two 3-pointers, and ended with 13 points. Gaige Armbrewster (Oakfield/Oakfield-Alabama) and Joel Davis (Watertown) each pulled down five rebounds, and Armbrewster shared the team lead with four assists.

Martin Garza poured in 31 points and also had four rebounds and three steals for Fredonia (3-20, 3-13 SUNYAC). He made 8-of-15 shots, including 5-of-7 from the arc, and sank all 10 of his free throws. Stevie Williams added nine points and Ethan Sokolowski led the Blue Devils with six assists.

Cortland shot 52 percent for the game, including 59 percent in the first half. Fredonia finished at 39 percent shooting from the floor. Both teams excelled from the foul line - Fredonia made 18-of-22 charity tosses and Cortland was 16-for-20.

Cortland opened up a 12-0 lead five minutes into the game and led 23-8 two minutes later. Fredonia got back to within 28-20 at the midway point of the half, and was down 36-26 with five minutes left before Cortland ended the period on a 12-2 run to take a 48-28 lead. Austin scored eight points and Coston four in that stretch. The closest Fredonia got in the second half was 13 points on three occasions.

The Red Dragons finish the regular season Saturday afternoon at Morrisville. Cortland will host the SUNYAC tournament semifinals and finals Feb. 27-28.
