GREENSBORO, N.C. – Nationally sixth-ranked Lynchburg scored five runs without a hit in the top of the fourth to take a 6-0 lead and the Hornets defeated 13th-ranked Cortland, 12-3, at the D3 Showcase at First National Bank Field.
Cortland (1-1) will play Christopher Newport Saturday at 1:15 p.m. - the time was pushed later due to Friday's last scheduled game not being played due to the length of the first three contests.
Cortland actually out-hit Lynchburg, 9-8, but seven Red Dragon pitchers walked a combined 17 batters. Lynchburg (3-1) starter Tyler Kaltreide, an All-American last season, improved to 2-0 after allowing six hits and three runs with two walks and four strikeouts in five and a third innings.
Talon Elkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) started for Cortland and gave up three hits and two runs in three and a third innings. He walked two and struck out two. Offensively, Elkins was 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Anthony Carlo (North Bellmore/St. Anthony's), as a reserve, finished 3-for-3 with a run scored,
Lucas Granger (Horseheads) hit a solo homer, and
Danny Jackson (Lagrangeville/Arlington) was 1-for-2 with a double and run scored.
For Lynchburg, Sean Pokorak was 2-for-4 with two doubles, a walk, three RBI and two runs, and Jack Pokorak was 2-for-5 with two doubles, a hit by pitch and two RBI. Joe Munitz went 2-for-5 with a walk and two runs, Conner Moore and Benton Jones each drew four walks, and Kyle Moshier walked three times.
Lynchburg scored in the third on a Jack Pakorak RBI double. The Hornets' five-run fourth featured five walks and two Cortland errors.
Down 8-0 entering the bottom of the fifth, Cortland got two runs back on a Carlo single, Jackson double, and RBI groundouts by
Trey McGowan (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) and Elkins. Granger homered to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Lynchburg finished the scoring with single runs in the seventh and eighth and two in the ninth.
