#20 Cortland Throttles Scranton, 17-5

CORTLAND, NY – The nationally 20th-ranked Red Dragons scored 10 straight goals in the second and third quarters to run away with a 17-5 victory over Scranton in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon on Grady Field. Cortland improves to 4-2 on the year, while Scranton is now 1-6 with the defeat.
 
Eli Volk (Alamo, CA/San Ramon Valley) had a career-high six goals and one assist for seven points to lead Cortland offensively, while Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover) added five goals. Mason Carroll (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) chipped in two goals and an assist, while Stefan Swedlund (Randolph, NJ) had two goals.
 
Tucker Macknik (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) picked up nine ground balls and had two caused turnovers. Nicky Miltenberger (Ridge/Longwood) and Chad Bowen (Yorktown) each won 8-of-10 faceoffs for the Red Dragons. Charlie Falowski (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) made five saves in goal to earn the victory, and also collected four ground balls.
 
Jason Kozak scored two of Scranton's five goals, while Kyle Holmes contributed a goal and an assist. Carsen Kirchner made nine saves and allowed 10 goals in the first half for the Royals.
 
Volk opened the scoring for Cortland just over three minutes into the first quarter, and Kavanagh followed with a goal almost a minute later, to give the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead.
 
The teams alternated goals over the remainder of the frame, with Kozak scoring two of three goals for Scranton, and Swedlund and Volk each tallying a goal for Cortland, as the Red Dragons held a slim 4-3 lead after one period.
 
Cortland then scored the next 10 goals of the game to break the contest open. In the second quarter, Kavanagh scored three of Cortland's six goals, including two goals in the final minute of the half, while Volk added two more goals and Swedlund scored another goal. The Red Dragons finished with a 17-5 edge in shot attempts and an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal during the second period.
 
Cortland opened the second half with four more goals to complete the 10-0 run, highlighted by two goals from Volk, a goal by Carroll less than a minute into the period, and James Violi's (East Islip) fourth goal of the season.
 
Scranton finally ended the Cortland run when Holmes netted a goal with 3:49 remaining in the third quarter, but the Red Dragons still held a commanding 14-4 lead into the fourth quarter.
 
The Royals scored the first goal of the fourth quarter with a little over 10 minutes remaining, and the Red Dragons ended the game by scoring the final three goals to create the 17-5 margin of victory. Carroll and Kavanagh each scored a goal in the fourth quarter, while Sean Olvany (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) tallied his first goal as a Red Dragon to complete the scoring.
 
The Red Dragons finished with a decisive 66-22 lead in shot attempts, including a 33-11 lead in shots on goal. Cortland was 20-of-26 on faceoffs, collected 48 ground balls to Scranton's 31 ground balls, and had just 11 turnovers compared to 23 by the Royals.
