CORTLAND, NY – Visiting Muhlenberg scored four times in the final 3:23 of the fourth quarter, including the game-winning goal with eight seconds left, to earn a 12-11 victory over the nationally 19th-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team on Wednesday evening on Grady Field. The Mules improve to 4-4 on the year, while Cortland drops to 4-3.
Cortland was led in scoring by
Nick Stoecker (East Setauket/Ward Melville), who had four goals and an assist.
Eli Volk (Alamo, CA/San Ramon Valley) added three goals and an assist, and
Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover) chipped in two goals and an assist.
James Sullivan (Rockville Centre/South Side) had three caused turnovers and two ground balls for the Red Dragons, while
Tucker Macknik added two caused turnovers and seven ground balls.
Charlie Falowski (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) finished with nine saves.
Chase Kusko finished with five assists to lead Muhlenberg, while six different players scored two goals for the Mules, led by two goals and an assist from Daniel Friedel. Parker Kusko, Flynn Decker, Luc Belvill, Connor Sutton, and Charlie Falk were the other Muhlenberg players to tally two goals. Jace Riley Day made 16 saves in goal to record the victory.
The game was tied at 1-1 after a quarter of action, with Friedel's goal just over two minutes in being answered by Stoecker's 13th goal of the year with 10:23 remaining, and neither team scored for the rest of the period.
Cortland outscored Muhlenberg 4-3 in the second quarter, with a goal each from Stoecker, Volk,
Stefan Swedlund (Randolph, NJ), and Kavanagh, with Kavanagh giving Cortland the lead with five seconds left in the half.
Stoecker added a pair of goals in the third quarter, along with one goal from Volk, as the Red Dragons built an 8-6 lead into the final frame.
Cortland held an 11-8 lead with 6:04 remaining after Kavanagh's 21st goal of the season, and maintained possession of the ensuing faceoff and ran the clock to under 4:23 before the Mules were able to regain possession.
Muhlenberg took advantage of a Cortland slashing penalty to score a man-up goal, then added another man-up goal with 2:26 remaining after a pair of penalties by the Red Dragons at the same time.
Belvill tied the game at 11-11 for Muhlenberg with 1:21 remaining, and the Mules got possession on the faceoff. Muhlenberg held for the final chances, and Friedel's shot with under 10 seconds left went off the pipe, but Sutton scooped up the ground ball and deposited a shot into the goal with eight seconds left.
Cortland won the final faceoff, but didn't have enough time to record a shot, falling by a one-goal margin for the third time of the season, including the second time giving up the winning goal in the final minute of action.
