KISSIMMEE, FLA. -
Olivia DiSalvo (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) and
Gianna Endieveri (Glens Falls) combined on a five-hitter and
Katie Stork (Massapequa) drove in two runs as the Cortland softball team opened its Florida Spring Break trip with a 4-2 win over Wisconsin-Platteville.
Â
The game featured nearly a two-hour lightning and rain delay in the top of the seventh inning, and with other storms predicted, Cortland's scheduled game with Bates on Monday afternoon was canceled. Cortland (2-5) is scheduled to return to action Wednesday in Kissimmee with games versus Rutgers-Camden at 10 a.m. and UMass Dartmouth at 12:15 p.m.
Â
DiSalvo earned her first collegiate victory, allowing five hits and two runs over five-plus innings. She struck out three and walked none. Endieveri entered in the bottom of the sixth with a runner on first and Cortland up 4-2 and retired all six batters she faced for the save.
Â
The bottom third of the batting order did a lot of the damage for the Red Dragons, combining to go 3-for-6 with two walks and four RBI.
Morgan Ellerbrock (Colonie), in the seventh spot, was 1-for-2 with a walk and RBI,
Kayla Pendergast (West Hempstead), in the eighth spot, finished 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI, and Stork, batting ninth, was 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI. In addition,
Shannon Scotto (Putnam Valley/Lakeland) went 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored and
Kayla Santo (Franklin Square/Valley Stream North) finished 1-for-2 with a run.
Â
For Platteville (7-4), Allison Peters and Calli Storms drove in runs and Rylee Broshous doubled and scored a run. Starter Carlie Jo Brownlee allowed two runs in an inning and a third for the loss.
Â
Cortland went up 2-0 in the second without the benefit of a hit. Scotto walked and, after a wild pitch, Santo was hit by a pitch. With one out, Ellerbrock walked to load the bases, Pendergast walked to force in a run, and Stork was hit by a pitch to bring in a run.
Â
The Pioneers got a run back in the bottom of the second. Mia Savage was hit by a pitch to start the inning and pinch runner Taylor Lynch moved to second on a one-out single by Delila Liston. With two outs, Storms singled up the middle to drive in Lynch. An error on the play put runners on second and third, but DiSalvo escaped further damage by getting the next batter to fly out.
Â
Cortland scored in the third to take a 3-1 lead. Scotto and Santo singled with one out, and a fielder's choice force out moved Scotto to third. Ellerbrock followed with an RBI single to right center. In the sixth, the Red Dragons tackled on an insurance run on back-to-back, two-out doubles by Pendergast and Stork. Platteville opened the bottom of the sixth with a Broshous double and Peters RBI single before Endieveri entered and shut the door.
