Cortland Completes Weekend Sweep with Pair of 10-0 Victories Over Fredonia

CORTLAND, NY – The Cortland baseball team rode dominant offense and pitching to a doubleheader sweep over visiting Fredonia to finish a SUNYAC three-game series at Wallace Field on Saturday. The Red Dragons earned a 10-0 victory in seven innings in the opener, and added another run-rule win by the same score in game two. With the sweep, Cortland improves to 20-7-1 overall and 12-0 in the SUNYAC, while Fredonia drops to 5-18 overall and 4-6 in conference play.

(Game 1) Cortland 10, Fredonia 0 (7 inn.)
The Red Dragons scored in four different innings and broke the game open with a six-run fourth. Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Logan Karwowski (Clay/Cicero-North Syracuse) walked, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI single by Danny Jackson (Lagrangeville/Arlington).

The Red Dragons added two runs in the third. Talon Elkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) singled and later scored on an RBI single by Joe Yovino (Levittown/Division Avenue), and Jackson added another RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0.

Cortland pushed six runs across in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 9-0. Trey McGowan (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) singled, and Lucas Granger (Horseheads) launched a two-run homer over the left field wall. Later in the inning, Karwowski and Yovino each delivered RBI singles, and a fielder's choice by Jack McFerran (Selkirk/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) brought in another run. Yovino capped the rally by stealing home as part of a double steal.

The Red Dragons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Tristan Gatchalian (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) blasted a two-run homer over the wall in left-center.

Cortland put the game out of reach in the second inning with a seven-run outburst. After Anthony Carlo (North Bellmore/St. Anthony's) and Jackson reached base, JJ DeLawder (Hyde Park/Franklin D. Roosevelt) tripled to right-center to drive in two runs. McGowan followed with an RBI single, and Gatchalian added a two-run double. Joe Yovino contributed a sacrifice fly, and Karwowski followed with another sacrifice fly to cap the inning and give Cortland a 9-0 lead.
