CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland softball team split a non-league doubleheader at home versus RPI, winning the first game, 1-0, before losing the second game, 1-0 in eight innings.
Â
Both Cortland (13-6) and RPI (14-6) were NCAA qualifiers last year and competed in the same regional at Rowan University. Cortland defeated the Engineers in an elimination game at that regional to avenge a sweep by RPI at home during the regular season.
Â
The combined two runs are the fewest scored in a Cortland softball doubleheader since April 3, 2008, when the Red Dragons won 1-0 and lost 1-0 to visiting Plattsburgh.
Â
Cortland will host Oneonta Friday at 2 p.m. (time was recently moved up) in a rematch of last year's SUNYAC tournament championship round.

Cortland 1, RPI 0
Â
Gianna Endieveri (Glens Falls) tossed a four-hit shutout for Cortland in the opener as the Engineers were held scoreless for the first time this season. She struck out eight and walked two. RPI starter Callie Volker gave up four hits, one walk and one run with two strikeouts in four innings and Maggie Kreis allowed only one hit in two scoreless innings of relief.
Â
Cortland scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the third.
Sam Pusloskie (Clarence) reached on a one-out single and moved to second on a
Katie Stork (Massapequa) single. With two outs,
Shelby LaMont (Amsterdam) hit a single to center to score Pusloskie. The Red Dragons left the bases loaded in that inning.
Â
RPI's best scoring chance came in the top of the second. Maddy Brooks led off with a double and stole third, but Endieveri struck out the next three batters. The Engineers also left a runner on third in the fourth inning and runners on second base in the first and seventh innings.
Â
Pusloskie finished 1-for-1 with a walk and run scored, Stork was 1-for-2 and LaMont finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Kaeli McAnally (Islip) and
Kayla Pendergast (West Hempstead) each were 1-for-3. For RPI, Olivia Termi was 1-for-2 with a walk, while Callista Adorno, Brooks and Gaby Heim each finished 1-for-3. Brooks and Heim each had a double.
Â
RPI 1, Cortland 0 (8 inn.)
Â
In the nightcap, Cortland's
Olivia DiSalvo (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) and RPI's Ava Markert matched scoreless innings until the eighth. Markert finished with a six-hit shutout, striking out five and not walking anyone over eight frames. DiSalvo allowed eight hits and one unearned run with nine strikeouts and one walk in eight innings.
Â
The NCAA tiebreaker rule, where a runner is placed on second to start the inning, was used starting in the eighth. In the top of the eighth for RPI, pinch runner Kylie Grabler advanced to third on an Addison Shaffer sac bunt, Brooks walked and stole second, and Lauren Cosselman reached on a bunt single to drive in Grabler. Cortland avoided further damage when third baseman Stork threw out Brooks trying to score on a bunt, followed by an inning-ending groundout. In the bottom of the eighth, Markert retired Cortland in order on a lineout, groundout and flyout.
Â
Cortland left on runners on first and third in the first inning and runners on first and second in the third inning. In the seventh, Cummings singled and moved to third on a Pendergast sac bunt and a groundout, but Markert induced a groundout to second to send the game to extra innings.
Â
RPI left 12 runners on base, including two in five different innings, but no RPI runner made it to third base until the eighth.
Â
For Cortland,
Shannon Scotto (Putnam Valley/Lakeland) went 2-for-4, while
Morgan Ellerbrock (Colonie) and Cummings each finished 1-for-3. Adorno was 3-for-3 and Cosselman finished 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Engineers.
