ALFRED, NY – The Cortland women's soccer team began State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play with a 7-0 win at Alfred State on Saturday evening. Cortland improves to 4-2-0 (1-0-0 SUNYAC), while Alfred State drops to 3-2-1 (0-1-0 SUNYAC).
Cassia Schuyler (Cincinnatus) and
Gianna Cirilla (Pattersonville/Schalmont) each scored two goals for the Red Dragons, with Cirilla also providing an assist.
Haley Loscalzo (East Northport/Commack) and
Maia Allard (Castelton/Columbia) both scored their first goals of the year, with Allard adding an assist.
Tyla Vuotto (Lynbrook) also recorded a goal and an assist, and
Piper Klammer (Mahopac) contributed two assists.
Olivia Rouse (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) made three saves in goal for her second shutout of the season,
Nyah Sinkler (Farmingville/Sachem East) contributed her first collegiate point with an assist, and
Dana Scruggs (Bethpage) posted her first point of the year with an assist.
Madeline Cox made nine saves in goal for the Pioneers, and Isabella Hoffman had two shots on target.
Cortland opened the scoring in the 11 minute, as Klammer crossed a low pass from down the left side that was flicked on in the center of the 18-yard area by Vuotto towards Schuyler at the right side of the box, and the sophomore struck a right-footed shot into the top right corner of the net.
Schuyler netted her second goal of the game from near the right sideline outside the 18-yard area in the 23rd minute, floating the ball over the outstretched arms of Cox and into the top left corner of the goal after a pass in the midfield from Scruggs.
Just six minutes later, Cortland added a third goal on Cirilla's first tally of the evening.
Jillian Nicolosi (Farmingdale/St. Anthony's) lofted a deep pass over the top of the Alfred State defense and Klammer was able to outrun a defender to reach the ball first. Klammer's initial shot was turned away by Cox, but Cirilla finished off the rebound to stake the Red Dragons to a three-goal lead into halftime.
Vuotto gave the Red Dragons a 4-0 lead in the 51st minute, striking a sweet shot into the bottom right corner of the net off a long free kick pass from Sinkler from the Cortland defensive side of midfield.
Loscalzo fired a low strike into the bottom right corner of the net in the 69th minute off of an assist from Cirilla, and then Cirilla netted her second goal of the game just two minutes later after a long pass over the top of the Alfred State defense from Allard.
Allard scored from the penalty spot to complete the scoring in the 82nd minute after Scruggs was fouled by an Alfred State defender inside the penalty area, firing a shot into the corner of the goal on her spot kick to wrap up the victory.
