Volleyball Completes Perfect SUNYAC Weekend With Four-Set Wins vs. Potsdam, Geneseo

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 POTSDAM, N.Y. - Cortland completed a 3-0 weekend at SUNYAC women's volleyball conference play in Potsdam with four-set wins over both the host school and Geneseo.

The Red Dragons (11-13, 3-3 SUNAYC) moved into sole possession of fifth place in the league standings with three conference matches remaining (Oct. 23-24 vs. New Paltz, Plattsburgh and Buffalo State). Cortland is a game behind Oswego and Oneonta, who are tied for third at 4-2, and a game ahead of Fredonia, Buffalo State and Geneseo, who are tied for sixth at 2-4. The top six teams qualify for the SUNYAC postseason tournament.

Cortland lost the first set to Potsdam (4-16, 0-6) before winning 15-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-12. Sophomore Courtney Silberer (Centereach) and sophomore Janine Patora (Salt Point/Arlington) led the way for the Red Dragons with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Sophomore Amanda May (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) had eight kills and one error in 19 attempts for a .368 attack percentage, while sophomore Nicole Silberer (Centereach) posted six kills with one error in 23 attempts.

Courtney Silberer led the squad with four blocks, two solo, and junior Liz Roberts (Island Park/West Hempstead) ended with 36 assists. May paced the team with four aces. Five Red Dragons tallied double-figure digs, led by 15 from junior Melanie McGuirk's (Lido Beach/Kellenberg). Junior Samantha Czeczotka (Elwood/John H. Glenn) had 14 digs, while Patora, Roberts and sophomore Sarah Piacentini (Webster/Webster Schroeder) finished with 13 apiece.

Rachel Topf and Stephanie Maddox led Potsdam with eight kills each and Brianna Rodda had 30 assists.

Cortland finished the day with a wild win over Geneseo (9-13, 2-4). The Red Dragons won a 30-28 nailbiter in the first set, then amazingly cruised to a 25-5 win in the second. The Knights responded with a 25-23 victory in the third set, but Cortland closed the match with a 25-16 fourth-set decision.

The Silberer sisters led the offense as Courtney put down 14 kills and Nicole had 12. Courtney finished with only two errors in 24 attempts for a .500 attack percentage, and she also finished with five blocks. Czeczotka totaled 11 kills and 17 digs and Patora had 10 kills and 16 digs.

Roberts led the team with 42 assists and eight blocks and added 14 digs. May registered nine kills and seven blocks. McGuirk amassed a team-high 24 digs from her libero position, and she tied for the team lead, along with Piacentini, with three aces. Cortland finished as a team with a .230 attack percentage and 12 blocks. Tricia Baxley led Geneseo with 13 kills.

Cortland returns to action Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16-17, at the Elmira Invitational. The Red Dragons will face Hunter and Utica on Friday and Elmira and Wilkes on Saturday.
