Field Hockey Defeats Elmira, 9-1

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore Jessica Welsh (Hamilton) led six Cortland goal scorers with three goals and one assist to lead the Red Dragons past Elmira, 9-1, in non-conference field hockey action Sunday afternoon at the Stadium Complex. Cortland improved to 2-0 with the win, while the Soaring Eagles fell to 0-2.

Sophomore Shannon McGuinness (Carle Place) also had a big day offensively for the Red Dragons, tallying two goals and one assist. Junior Megan O'Brien (Holmes/Carmel) recorded one goal and one assist, and junior Anna Branch (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) scored a goal. Freshmen Amanda Glaser (Melville/Walt Whitman) and Amanda D'Amico (Smithtown/Smithtown West) each scored her first career goal, freshman Kelly Durso (East Islip) recorded her first career point with an assist and junior Meg Redmond (Accord/Rondout Valley) chipped in with an assist.

Sophomore goalie Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) made one save in the first half for Cortland, and senior goalie Mairead Hourihan (Yorktown Heights/Lakeland) stopped one shot in the second half. Redmond also contributed a defensive save.

Junior Atu Machika (Machinga, Malawi/Hebron Academy) tallied Elmira's goal with junior Sarah McCaffrey (Lambertville, NJ/South Hunterdon Regional) collecting an assist. Junior goalie Julie Hockenberger (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) registered 17 saves, and freshman Emily Selbert (Buffalo/Nichols) recorded a defensive save.

Cortland took a 5-0 lead at the half as Welsh and McGuinness each netted a pair of goals and O'Brien scored an unassisted goal. The lead grew to 9-0 in the second half with Branch, Welsh, Glaser and D'Amico each recording a goal. The Soaring Eagles spoiled the shutout bid with 3:59 remaining in the game when Machika knocked a loose ball in front into the cage after an Elmira penalty corner.

The Red Dragons outshot Elmira, 34-5, in the game and held a 13-3 advantage in penalty corners.
