FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Fredonia men's hockey team jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period and held off a Cortland comeback in defeating the Red Dragons, 5-4, in SUNYAC action Saturday night. The Blue Devils raised their record to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference. The Red Dragons dropped to 3-5 and 1-4.

Sophomore Alex Storjohann (Phoenix, AZ/Kirkland Lake) and freshman Mike Sciore (Syracuse/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) each recorded a goal and an assist for the Red Dragons. Junior Martin Lavallee (Goose Bay, NL/Nepean Raiders) and freshman Shane Beaulieu (Brooklin, ON/Powassan VooDoos) added goals, while juniors Sean Perichak (Oakville, ON/Markham Royals) and Douglas Elgstam (Stockholm, Sweden/New Jersey Rockets) and sophomores Louis DiMatteo (Nobleton, ON/Trenton Golden Hawks) and Justin Schebel (Brighton, MI/Powassan VooDoos) collected one assist apiece. Sophomore goalie Salvatore Lauretta (Center Moriches/Binghamton Jr. Senators) made 38 saves in his first career start.

Luke Rivera scored twice for Fredonia. Victor Tracy tallied a goal and an assist, and Colin Valentine and Ethan Kirbis each added a goal. Six different players chipped in with an assist. Goalie Eric Bogart stopped 29 shots.

The Blue Devils scored three times in a 4:17 span to open up their 3-0 advantage. Storjohann put Cortland on the scoreboard at 19:14 of the period. Valentine and Lavallee traded goals in the second period before Kirbis put Fredonia up, 5-2, with his power-play goal at 2:10 of the third period. Sciore made it a 5-3 game just 49 seconds later, and Beaulieu pulled Cortland to within 5-4 at the 6:55 mark. With 59 seconds remaining, Cortland took three penalties and Fredonia was whistled for one. The Red Dragons still pulled Lauretta with 30 seconds remaining but could not net the equalizer.
