CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland's women's swimming and diving team finished first out of seven teams and the Red Dragon men placed second out of six schools at the season-opening Cortland Pumpkin Relays at Holsten Pool.
Cortland's women finished with 350 points, followed by Nazareth with 314, Adelphi with 240 and New Paltz with 217. Marywood (116), Roberts Wesleyan (51) and Wells (47) rounded out the field. On the men's side, Nazareth was the winner with 324 points, narrowly edging Cortland (306) for the title. New Paltz (237), Adelphi (121), Marywood (92) and Wells (29) also competed.
Cortland hosted a season-opening relay meet for the third straight year. The event features an unorthodox format with many relays that are normally not held, including a number of three-swimmer events.
The women won six relays during the meet.
Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) and
Julia Torell (Camillus/CBA) were each on four winning relays,
Marissa Kordal (Eden) swam on three, and five Red Dragons –
Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland),
Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint),
Leah Bernhardt (Groton),
Erica Koumas (East Meadow) and
Anni Muehlbauer (Heidelberg, Germany/Helmholtz-Gymnasium) – were on two apiece.
Davey, Szewczyk, Torell and Kordal won the 400-yard medley relay (4:06.25). Miller, Davey,
Kailyn Anselment (Queensbury/Glens Falls) and Bernhardt were on the winning 650-yard freestyle relay (6:38.38) that won by about a half a second. Kordal, Koumas and Torell won the 3x100-yard butterfly (3:05.64), while Koumas, Kordal and Bernhardt finished first by just one hundredth of a second in the 3x100-yard medley (3:18.87). Muehlbauer, Torell and Davey comprised three quarters of both the winning 200-yard freestyle relay (1:42.39), with Miller, and the 200-yard medley relay (1:53.79), with Szewczyk. In addition,
Taylor Williams (Slate Hill/Minisink Valley) posted the best six-dive score on the 3-meter board at 256.45 points.
Cortland's men captured one first-place honor as
Noah Farmer (New Hartford),
Alex Fisher (Smithtown/Hauppauge) and
Dylan Cornelia (Deer Park) won the 3x100-yard breaststroke relay (3:10.80). The Red Dragons registered five relay runner-up showings, with
Tim Rokos (Duanesburg) on four of those units and Cornelia, Farmer,
Josh Chamak (New City/Clarkstown North) and
John Severs (Suffern) on two each.
Pat Conway (Wantagh/Kellenberg Memorial) had the second-best score on both diving events (217.70 points on 1-meter, 245.35 points on 3-meter).
Cortland will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m. when it travels to Ithaca for men's and women's dual meets.
