ITHACA, N.Y. – Cortland earned eight individual event victories and one relay win in a 161-139 loss at Ithaca College to open the dual-meet season.
The Red Dragons actually had a small chance to tie the meet in the final relay, but needed to take the top two spots in order to do so. Ithaca, however, won the race, with Cortland second.
Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland) earned two wins with times of 1:09.46 in the 100-yard breaststroke and 2:34.17 in the 200-yard breaststroke. She also swam the 100-yard breaststroke leg on Cortland's winning 400-yard medley relay in 1:07.68 and combined with
Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) (backstroke, 1:01.83),
Julia Torell (Camillus/CBA) (butterfly, 1:00.73) and
Marissa Kordal (Eden) (freestyle, 56.61) to win with a final time of 4:06.85. Cortland also took second in the event as
Anni Muehlbauer (Heidelberg, Germany/Helmholtz-Gymnasium),
Emma Gulbin (Wall, NJ),
Erica Koumas (East Meadow) and
Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint) finished in 4:17.47.
Davey won the 100-yard freestyle (54.73) and was second in the 50-yard freestyle (24.93), losing by just five hundredths of a second. Torell won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.74.
Leah Bernhardt (Groton) took top honors in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:10.54). Koumas won the 200-yard butterfly (2:19.36).
Taylor Williams (Slate Hill/Minisink Valley) won 3-meter diving (267.50 points) and was second in 1-meter diving (246.45 points). Her 3-meter score surpasses the NCAA regional qualifying standard of 265 points, meaning she'll need to just reach that mark one more time to earn a regional berth.
Kordal won the 200-yard individual medley (2:17.76), and the quartet of Torell, Muehlbauer, Miller and Davey finished second in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:42.55).
Cortland will travel to Buffalo State next Saturday for a 1 p.m. dual meet.
