Cortland Women Earn Convincing Dual-Meet Win at Buffalo State

Alana Szewczyk won the 50-yard and 100-yard breaststroke races and swam on the winning 400-yard medley relay team
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Leah Bernhardt (Groton) won three events and Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland), Anni Muehlbauer (Heidelberg, Germany/Helmholtz-Gymnasium), Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) and Taylor Williams (Slate Hill/Minisink Valley) each took top honors in two events as Cortland easily defeated host Buffalo State, 187-92, in dual-meet action.

Bernhardt won the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:38.77), 200-yard freestyle (2:04.37) and 500-yard freestyle (5:32.36). Szewczyk won the 50-yard breaststroke (32.27) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.35), while Muehlbauer finished first in the 50-yard backstroke (30.12) and 100-yard backstroke (1:04.70).

Davey won the 50-yard freestyle (24.88) and had the fastest time as an exhibition entry in the 200-yard individual medley (2:19.28). Williams won 1-meter diving (246.20 points) and posted the best score on the 3-meter board (219.30 points) as an exhibition entry.

Other winners for the Red Dragons included Allie Gibson (Watkins Glen) in the 100-yard freestyle (58.82) and Marissa Kordal (Eden) in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.84). Cortland also had the best times in both relays. Muehlbauer, Szewczyk, Kordal and Davey won the 400-yard medley relay (4:13.23). Muehlbauer, Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint), Bernhardt and Davey won the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:54.27) as an exhibition.

Miller was runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle (2:07.29) and 500-yard freestyle (5:50.52). Sarah Colefield (Oakdale/Connetquot) took second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:09.39) and 50-yard butterfly (30.71), and Kailyn Anselment (Queensbury/Glens Falls) placed second in the 50-yard backstroke (32.25) and 100-yard backstroke (1:10.24).

Adriane Casey (West Islip) had the second-best scores behind Williams in the diving events. She was second in 1-meter diving at 196.90 points and second as an exhibition on the 3-meter board at 182.10 points.

Kelcey Madigan (Waverly) finished second in the 50-yard breaststroke (34.71) and Jasmine Elmassry (Queens/Francis Lewis) placed second in the 50-yard freestyle (26.69). Vanessa Vegder (Dansville) turned in a second-place time of 1:15.91 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Also, Gibson finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (26.69), Kordal finished second in the 200 IM (2:22.80) as an exhibition, and the combination of Vegder, Kordal, Anselment and Iris Incitti (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) had the second-best time in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:02.80) as an exhibition.

Cortland travels to Geneseo on Friday for a 6 p.m. dual meet.
