Taylor Williams won 3-meter diving and secured a spot at next March's NCAA Diving Regional
CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's swimming and diving team won eight individual events and three relays and easily captured the team title at the eight-school Snow Flurries Invitational, hosted by the Red Dragons Friday and Saturday at Holsten Pool.
Cortland finished with 946 points, followed by Brockport with 702 and Oswego with 627.5. Oneonta was fourth with 505 points, one better than fifth-place Fredonia. Potsdam (185.5), Sarah Lawrence (145) and Buffalo State (112) rounded out the field.
Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) won three individual races, capturing the 50-yard freestyle (24.98), 100-yard freestyle (54.79) and 200-yard freestyle (2:00.27).
Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland) won both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.44) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:34.47).
Marissa Kordal (Eden) was the 400-yard individual medley champion (4:55.69) and finished fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:28.75) and 200-yard butterfly (2:22.31).
Cortland claimed the top two spots in both diving events.
Taylor Williams (Slate Hill/Minisink Valley) won 3-meter diving (260.80 points) and was second on the 1-meter board (232.75 points), while
Ashley Zachgo (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) won the 1-meter competition (252.70 points) and was second on the 3-meter board (256.30 points). While the divers only did six dives for the official team scoring, they exhibitioned the full 11-dive format. Williams had the best 11-dive scores on both boards – 408.40 on 1-meter and 443.90 on 3-meter – and secured her spot at the NCAA Diving Regionals in March. Zachgo had a 395.70 score for 11 dives on 1-meter and 407.55 points for the 3-meter board. The 1-meter score gives her the first of two required scores for regional qualification, and her 3-meter 11-dive score was less than three points from the qualifying standard.
Kailyn Anselment (Queensbury/Glens Falls) finished second in both the 500-yard (5:27.27) and 1,650-yard (18:52.80) freestyle events and was fourth in the 400-yard IM (5:05.96).
Erica Koumas (East Meadow) finished second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:18.01), third in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.94) and seventh in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:44.43), and
Anni Muehlbauer (Heidelberg, Germany/Helmholtz-Gymnasium) was the 100-yard backstroke runner-up (1:03.34), placed fourth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:19.45) and was seventh in the 200-yard IM (2:22.20).
Leah Bernhardt (Groton) posted three top-four finishes. She was third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:27.39) and the 400-yard IM (5:05.25) and finished fourth in the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:59.60).
Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint) ended third in the 50-yard freestyle (25.73), fifth in the 100-yard freestyle (57.22) and seventh in the 200-yard freestyle (2:06.72).
Kelcey Madigan (Waverly) turned in a fifth-place time of 2:41.27 in the 200-yard breaststroke and was seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.17).
Allie Gibson (Watkins Glen) finished fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (26.29),
Becca Kanoza (Syracuse/West Genesee) was fifth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.21),
Vanessa Vegder (Dansville) placed sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:13.78) and
Josie LaPolt (New Paltz) was seventh in the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.58).
Adriane Casey (West Islip) finished sixth in 1-meter diving (202.65 points, and 371.90 points for 11 dives that was fourth-best) and seventh on the 3-meter board (178.65 points).
Davey, Kordal and Miller were part of Cortland's three winning relays as well as a second-place unit. Miller, Muehlbauer, Kordal and Davey won the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:42.13). Davey, Szewczyk, Kordal and Miller won the 400-yard medley relay (4:10.55) and finished second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:53.78). Kordal, Miller, Bernhardt and Davey teamed to win the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:44.90). Also, Gibson, Anselment, Bernhardt and Muehlbauer finished third in the 800-yard freestyle relay (8:31.01).
Cortland returns to action on January 4 when it hosts Hartwick in a dual meet.
