Williams Breaks School 1m Diving Record During Red Dragons' Dual Win vs. New Paltz

Taylor Williams posted an 11-dive score of 492.68 points on the 1-meter board, more than 10 points better than the previous school record
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore Taylor Williams (Slate Hill/Minisink Valley) set a school record in 1-meter diving and Cortland finished first in 10 individual swimming events as the Red Dragons defeated New Paltz, 149-102, in a women's swimming and diving dual meet at Holsten Pool.

Williams recorded an 11-dive score of 492.68 points on the 1-meter board, breaking the previous school mark of 481.75 points by Miranda Fergus in 2016. Williams also registered a career best on the 3-meter board with a six-dive score of 283.50 points. Both scores are NCAA regional qualifiers, although Williams had already earned her trip to regionals with performances earlier in the season.

Ashley Zachgo (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) punched her ticket to the NCAA diving regionals after scoring a career-high 421.50 points on the 1-meter board in an 11-dive format for her second qualifying effort of the season. She also had a career-best 264.97 points in six dives on the 3-meter board, just shy of the 265-point regional standard. Cortland did not count its diving performances toward the team dual scoring as the team verdict was already decided.

Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh), Leah Bernhardt (Groton) and Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland) were each double winners in individual swimming events. Davey won the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.47) and 50-yard freestyle (25.29), Bernhardt captured the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:17.13) and 500-yard freestyle (5:29.19), and Szewczyk won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.14) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:32.16).

Kailyn Anselment (Queensbury/Glens Falls) won the 200-yard freestyle (2:04.35), Erica Koumas (East Meadow) was the winner in the 200-yard butterfly (2:18.09) and took second in the 100-yard butterfly(1:02.07), and Julia Torell (Camillus/CBA) was victorious in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.99). Marissa Kordal (Eden) had the fastest time in the 200-yard individual medley (2:20.10) as an exhibition entry and finished second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:21.05).

The combo of Davey, Szewczyk, Torell and Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint) won the 200-yard medley relay (1:52.27), while Miller, Torell, Anni Muehlbauer (Heidelberg, Germany/Helmholtz-Gymnasium) and Davey placed first in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:42.72) as an exhibition entry.

Miller finished second in both the 50-yard freestyle (26.31) and 100-yard freestyle (56.94). Abbey Gittschau (Camillus/West Genesee) was runner-up in the 1,000 freestyle (12:03.33) and Lauren McBrinn (Suffern/Paramus Catholic (NJ)) was second in the 500 freestyle (5:40.78). Becca Kanoza (Syracuse/West Genesee) finished second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:21.87).
