Red Dragons Post Numerous Event Victories in 184-104 Dual Win vs. Oswego

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's swimming and diving team earned top finishes in 14 individual events and two relays on the way to a 184-104 home dual victory over Oswego.

Four Red Dragons posted two victories each on the afternoon. Leah Bernhardt (Groton) won the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.80) and 500-yard freestyle (5:24.32) and Anni Muehlbauer (Heidelberg, Germany/Helmholtz-Gymnasium) won the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.85) and 200-yard backstroke (2:20.26). Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) captured the 50-yard freestyle (24.72) and 100-yard freestyle (54.84), while Marissa Kordal (Eden) won the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:19.80) and the 400-yard individual medley (5:02.84), the latter as an exhibition entry with Cortland already having sealed the team victory. Kordal also finished second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:34.83).

Erica Koumas (East Meadow) won the 200-yard butterfly (2:19.56) and was second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.75). Kelcey Madigan (Waverly) won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:40.56), Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland) was the victor in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.60), and Julia Torell (Camillus/CBA) won the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.41).

Ashley Zachgo (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) finished first on 1-meter diving (245.75 points), followed by Taylor Williams (Slate Hill/Minisink Valley) in second (238.40 points) and Adriane Casey (West Islip) in third (200.35 points). As technically exhibition entries on the 3-meter board due to the team score, Williams finished first (286.85 points), Zachgo was second (227.85 points) and Casey placed third (178.00 points).

The quartet of Davey, Szewczyk, Torell and Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint) won the meet-opening 200-yard medley relay (1:52.42). Miller, Allie Gibson (Watkins Glen), Muehlbauer and Davey closed the meet with an exhibition win in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:40.90), with the combo of Iris Incitti (Endwell/Maine-Endwell), Emma Gulbin (Wall, NJ), Bernhardt and Torell in second place (1:46.11).

Cortland swept the top three spots in two swimming events. Bernhardt's win in the 200-yard freestyle was followed by Kailyn Anselment (Queensbury/Glens Falls) in second (2:04.30) and Miller in third (2:05.82). The 100-yard backstroke featured Josie LaPolt's (New Paltz) second-place finish (2:22.31) and Becca Kanoza's (Syracuse/West Genesee) third-place effort (2:23.77) behind Muehlbauer's win.

Other Red Dragon highlights included Kanoza's second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.58), Gibson's runner-up showing in the 50-yard freestyle (26.22), Miller's second-place effort in the 100-yard freestyle (57.08) and Vanessa Vegder's (Dansville) second-place placement in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:42.94).

Cortland will compete at the RPI Invitational Saturday at noon.
