Cortland Women Third at RPI Invite; Koumas Wins 200 Butterfly

Erica Koumas won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:18.03
TROY, N.Y. - The Cortland women's swimming and diving team finished third out of five schools at the RPI Kumpf Invitational. Ithaca won the meet with 602 points, followed by RPI (557), Cortland (475), Skidmore (355) and William Smith (164).
 
In the dual scoring at the meet, Cortland finished 2-3 with victories over William Smith (182-50) and Skidmore (165-78) and setbacks to RPI (151-92) and Ithaca (145-98).
 
Erica Koumas (East Meadow) was Cortland's top finisher with a win in the 200-yard butterfly (2:18.03). Kailyn Anselment (Queensbury/Glens Falls) finished second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:14.33) and third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:27.19), Taylor Williams (Slate Hill/Minisink Valley) was second in 1-meter diving (239.90 points) and fourth in 3-meter diving (250.50 points), and Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland) finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:33.17).
 
Leah Bernhardt (Groton) posted two top-four showings with a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.61) and a fourth-place effort in the 500-yard freestyle (5:27.42). Lauren McBrinn (Suffern/Paramus Catholic (NJ)) placed fourth in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:23.97) and sixth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:23.52).
 
Anni Muehlbauer (Heidelberg, Germany/Helmholtz-Gymnasium) finished fifth in the 100-yard freestyle (57.53) and eighth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:24.56). Marissa Kordal (Eden) was fifth in the 200 IM (2:21.10) and Kelcey Madigan (Waverly) finished fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:38.26).
 
Ashley Zachgo (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) earned two top-eight diving finishes with a sixth-place score of 200.10 points on the 3-meter board and an eighth-place score of 180.35 points on the 1-meter board. Other Red Dragons posting top-eight individual finishes included Alison Haskell (Groton) in the 50-yard freestyle (6th place, 26.41), Adriane Casey (West Islip) in 1-meter diving (6th place, 204.50 points), and Becca Kanoza (Syracuse/West Genesee) in the 200-yard backstroke (8th place, 2:24.67).
 
Cortland finished second in both relays. Muehlbauer, Szewczyk, Kordal and Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint) recorded a time of 4:12.85 in the 400-yard medley relay, while Bernhardt, McBrinn, Anselment and Miller finished the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:55.56.
 
Cortland will host Le Moyne in a dual on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 1 p.m. on Senior Day in the Red Dragons' final home meet of the season.
