Cortland Women Victorious and Men Barely Edged by Div. II Le Moyne on Senior Day

2020 Cortland Swimming and Diving Seniors at the Red Dragons' final home meet of the season
CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women defeated Division II Le Moyne College, 165-124, and the Red Dragon men narrowly lost to the Dolphins, 153-141, in a meet that came down to the final relay during Cortland's Swimming and Diving Senior Day at Holsten Pool.

Cortland's 15 seniors were honored at the meet – the Red Dragons' final home contest of the season. Nine Red Dragon women were recognized – Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh), Jasmine Elmassry (Queens/Francis Lewis), Emma Gulbin (Wall, NJ), Becca Kanoza (Syracuse/West Genesee), Erica Koumas (East Meadow), Lauren McBrinn (Suffern/Paramus Catholic (NJ)), Anni Muehlbauer (Heidelberg, Germany/Helmholtz-Gymnasium) (a junior, but in her final season), Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland) and Vanessa Vegder (Dansville), along with six men – Pat Calhoun (Oneonta), Noah Farmer (New Hartford), Nick Galeto (West Islip), Tim Rokos (Duanesburg), Tom Ryan (Long Beach) and John Severs (Suffern).

Cortland will send divers to a meet at Ithaca College on Sunday at 10 a.m., and the entire team returns to action next Saturday at 1 p.m. with dual meets at Oneonta.

WOMEN'S RECAP:

Cortland featured three individual double-winners in the women's meet. Szewczyk won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.30) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:34.42), Leah Bernhardt (Groton) won the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:04.65) and 500-yard freestyle (5:24.44), and Taylor Williams (Slate Hill/Minisink Valley) captured both diving events with 282.75 points on the 1-meter board and 282.15 points as an exhibition entry on the 3-meter board.

Davey won the 50-yard freestyle (25.00), Muehlbauer was the winner in the 200-yard backstroke (2:20.62), and Julia Torell (Camillus/CBA) won the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.43). Muehlbauer was also the runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.07).

Cortland registered the best times in both relays. The 200-yard medley relay unit of Davey, Szewczyk, Torell and Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint) won in 1:52.67, and the combo of Muehlbauer, Torell, Miller and Davey was first as an exhibition entry in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:42.31).

Cortland swept the top three spots in three races plus both diving competitions. Davey was followed in the 50 freestyle by Alison Haskell (Groton) (26.31) and Allie Gibson (Watkins Glen) (26.57). Muehlbauer's win in the 200 backstroke was continued by Becca Kanoza (Syracuse/West Genesee) in second (2:21.71) and Josie LaPolt (New Paltz) in third (2:22.31). Szewczyk's led a sweep in the 200 breaststroke that included Kelcey Madigan (Waverly) (2:39.95) and Vegder (2:40.51). Adriane Casey (West Islip) was second on the 1-meter board (235.10 points) and third on the 3-meter board (210.10 points), while Ashley Zachgo (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was second on 3-meter (234.00 points) and third on 1-meter (203.85 points).

Other Red Dragon runners-up included: Marissa Kordal (Eden) in the 200-yard individual medley (2:18.94), who lost by less than half a second; Koumas in the 200-yard butterfly (2:13.75); and Miller in the 100-yard freestyle (57.65).

MEN'S RECAP:

Cortland trailed by only three points, 140-137, entering the final event, the 200-yard freestyle relay. Le Moyne, however, took first and third place in the race to clinch the team victory.

Three Red Dragons posted two wins each on the afternoon. Galeto won the 100-yard backstroke (53.90) and 200-yard backstroke (2:03.20), Hunter Bernhardt (Groton) was the winner in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:06.07) and 500-yard freestyle (4:55.56), and Pat Conway (Wantagh/Kellenberg Memorial) took top honors in 1-meter (204.00 points) and 3-meter (239.90 points) diving.

Rokos won the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.54) and was second in both the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.42) and 200-yard individual medley (2:04.96).

Jason Boyko (Poughkeepsie/Our Lady of Lourdes) placed second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:32.96) and 100-yard butterfly (57.22). Ryan was second in the 100-yard backstroke (57.33), Farmer finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:20.84) and Dylan Cornelia (Deer Park) was runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.03). Billy Donlevy (Bayside/Holy Cross) placed second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.97) and Aiden Poli (Cortland/Home schooled) touched the wall second in the 50-yard freestyle (22.82).

Cortland's opening 200-yard medley relay team of Galeto, Cornelia, Donlevy and Daniel Rawl (Kingston/Rondout Valley) lost by just 11 hundredths of a second with a time of 1:39.90. Galeto, Mo Diarra (New York/East Side Community), Donlevy and Poli comprised the Red Dragons' top 200-yard freestyle relay team that was clocked at 1:30.46.
