Red Dragon Women Defeat Hartwick, 176-116, to Open New Year

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's swimming and diving team won eight individual events, including two each by Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) and Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland), and the Red Dragons defeated visiting Hartwick, 176-116, in dual-meet action.

Davey won the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.81) and 50-yard freestyle (25.09) and Szewczyk claimed the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.89) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:37.56).

Anni Muehlbauer (Heidelberg, Germany/Helmholtz-Gymnasium) won the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.30) and was second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:19.79), losing that race by less than six tenths of a second. Leah Bernhardt (Groton) won the 500-yard freestyle (5:30.14) and was second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:22.92).

In the diving competition, Taylor Williams (Slate Hill/Minisink Valley) won on the 3-meter board (249.83 points) and was second in the 1-meter event (234.75 points). Ashley Zachgo (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) won on the 1-meter board (245.77 points) and Adriane Casey (West Islip) was second on the 3-meter board (214.42 points).

Cortland's 200-yard medley relay team of Davey, Szewczyk, Julia Torell (Camillus/CBA) and Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint) finished first in 1:53.31, followed by the foursome of Muehlbauer, Kelcey Madigan (Waverly), Marissa Kordal (Eden) and Allie Gibson (Watkins Glen) in second in 1:57.70.

Kordal posted two runner-up finishes with times of 56.75 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle and 2:20.69 in the 200-yard individual medley. Madigan was second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:42.01) and Torell finished second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.45).

Other Red Dragon individual runners-up were Iris Incitti (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.67) and Erica Koumas (East Meadow) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:18.47). Miller, Kailyn Anselment (Queensbury/Glens Falls), Bernhardt and Becca Kanoza (Syracuse/West Genesee) had the second-best time in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:56.40) as an exhibition entry.

Cortland will host New Paltz on Friday, Jan. 10, at 4 p.m.
