BUFFALO, N.Y. – Senior
Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) won the 200-yard freestyle and Cortland also earned three individual runner-up finishes and a second-place relay showing during the second full day of competition at the 2020 SUNYAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.
Cortland is solidly in second place out of nine schools with 429 points. Geneseo leads with 665. After Cortland, the next four teams are in a tight battle for third place with New Paltz (253) currently in that spot, followed by Brockport (239), Oneonta (236) and Oswego (225). Rounding out the field are Fredonia (153), Potsdam (134) and Buffalo State (77). The championship concludes on Saturday at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center.
Davey and freshman
Leah Bernhardt (Groton) claimed the top two spots in the 200 freestyle. Davey posted a winning time of 1:53.87 and Bernhardt was close behind in 1:54.14.
Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland) finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.48) and
Erica Koumas (East Meadow) was second in the 100-yard butterfly (57.99). In addition, the team of Davey, Szewczyk,
Julia Torell (Camillus/CBA) and
Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint) finished second in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:47.12.
The top three finishers in each event earn All-SUNYAC honors. Winners are first team, runners-up are second team and third-place finishers are third team.
Anni Muehlbauer (Heidelberg, Germany/Helmholtz-Gymnasium) posted a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (59.94) and Torell was fifth in the 100 butterfly (59.73).
Marissa Kordal (Eden) placed fifth in the 400-yard individual medley (4:43.54), followed by
Kailyn Anselment (Queensbury/Glens Falls) in sixth (4:52.31, 4:51.05 prelims).
Cortland swimmers registered eight other scoring performances on Friday evening. Miller was 11th in the 200 freestyle (2:00.15), Torell was 11th in the 100 backstroke (1:02.38, 1:02.26 prelims) and
Iris Incitti (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) finished 11th in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.60), with
Vanessa Vegder (Dansville) barely behind her in 12th place (1:10.61).
Becca Kanoza (Syracuse/West Genesee) finished 12th in the 100 backstroke (1:02.79) and 14th in the 100 butterfly (1:02.50).
Emma Gulbin (Wall, NJ) registered a 14th-place effort in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.34) and
Kelcey Madigan (Waverly) finished 16th in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.70, 1:11.62 prelims).
