Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the SUNY Cortland Athletics Department is once again this year honoring its student-athletes as part of an online "Awards Week" series of releases May 10-14 instead of conducting the C-Club Athletics Awards Ceremony.
The final set of award winners announced on Friday, May 14 were:
Carl "Chugger" Davis Award:
Dylan Dubuque (East Greenbush/Columbia), Football and Wrestling
M. Louise Moseley Award:
Kelly O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), Softball
Unsung Hero Awards:
Ben Walters (Lockport/Starpoint), Men's Basketball
Shannon Imbornoni (Bethpage/Our Lady of Mercy Academy), Women's Cross Country/Track and Field
The Davis and Moseley Awards are given to a senior male and senior female, respectively, for strong leadership skills and athletic achievement. Davis was Cortland's head football coach from 1932 to 1962 and also coached baseball, basketball and golf. Moseley was Cortland's Director of Women's Athletics from 1966-78. A pioneer for women's athletics, she played an integral role in the start of women's intercollegiate athletics at Cortland in the late 1960s.
The Unsung Hero Awards, which began in 2018, recognize accomplishments of student-athletes who led their teams to success in ways that cannot always be measured in statistical categories and who exemplifies the characteristics of a true leader - excelling in the classroom, and demonstrating humility, work ethic and integrity at all times in both practice and competition.
Dubuque has been a standout in both football and wrestling during his four years with the Red Dragons. As a starting linebacker, he earned All-Empire 8 honors in 2019 after registering 83 tackles, two interceptions and two blocked kicks. In wrestling, he earned all-region honors in both 2019 and 2020 at 197 pounds, qualified for the 2019 NCAA Division III Championships, and was a two-time National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Scholar All-American in both 2019 and 2021.
O'Gorman entered this spring as a two-time All-SUNYAC and all-region softball outfielder and three-time College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District selection. She also was voted to the SUNYAC Softball All-Decade Team (2010-19). A career .378 hitter to date, O'Gorman ranks ninth at Cortland with 188 career hits, third with 16 triples, tied for fourth with 41 doubles and tied for seventh with 18 homers, and also has recorded 111 RBI and 142 runs scored.
Walters persevered after twice being cut from the men's basketball team. He played in seven games off the bench in 2017-18 and averaged 3.5 points per game in 24 appearances in 2018-19. In the 2019-20 season, Walters started in 16 of his 26 appearance, averaged 10.1 points per game and made 54 3-pointers.
Imbornoni has been a four-year member of Cortland's women's cross country and track and field programs. She was an all-region performer and SUNYAC runner-up in the 800-meter run during both the 2019 and 2020 indoor track and field seasons, as well as during the 2019 outdoor season. She's been an active member of Cortland's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), and as a communications major conducted a series of interviews with former Cortland track and field and cross country national champions that were featured on Cortland's Athletics website.
(NOTE: No Senior Athletes of the Year, Rookies of the Year, or Coach of the Year were selected this year.)
