Lantrip Soars in NCAA High Jump Rankings, Sorensen Shines in Pole Vault, at Roberts Meet

Aubrianna Lantrip cleared 1.70 meters in the high jump to move into a tie for sixth nationally in Division III
ROCHESTER, N.Y. –Aubrianna Lantrip (Phelps/Midlakes) moved into a tie for sixth place nationally in Division III in the high jump and Dane Sorensen (Warwick/Warwick Valley) solidified his national standing in the pole vault to highlight Cortland's performances at the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks Capstone Meet.

Lantrip and Danielle Fisk (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) were the lone Cortland women competing at the meet. Lantrip and two Division I athletes each cleared 1.70 meters (5' 7"), with Lantrip officially finishing third due to total misses. Fisk finished in fifth place with a height of 1.60 meters (5' 3").

Sorensen was second overall and the top collegiate finisher in the pole vault at 4.85 meters (15' 11"), matching his season best and potentially helping him in tiebreaking situations for NCAA selections. He is currently tied for 10th place in Division III. Sorensen cleared 4.55, 4.70 and 4.85 meters on his first attempts at those heights before missing three times with good efforts at 5.00 meters (16' 4.75").

The 4x100-meter relay of Alhagie Sesay (Buffalo/Hutch Tech), Brett Morse (Saratoga Springs), Craig Denton (Albertson/Herricks) and Aaron Jones (Buffalo/Hutch Tech) finished first in 42.64 seconds. Jones was third, behind two Division I competitors, in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.84 seconds (14.81 prelims). Morse finished fourth (14.88, 14.85 prelims), Isaiah Brooks (Minoa/East Syracuse Minoa) was seventh (15.14, 15.10 prelims), and Zach Kashmer (Chili/Churchville-Chili) placed ninth (15.64). Kasher also tied for seventh in the pole vault at 4.40 meters (14' 5.25") and Denton was 10th in the 100-meter dash (11.41).

Amarian Hughes (Marlboro) was the runner-up in the triple jump at 13.69 meters (44' 11"). Wendell Brand (Sleepy Hollow) finished fourth in the triple jump (13.42 meters/44' 0.5") and seventh in the long jump (6.42 meters/21' 0.75"), and Sesay was fifth in the 100-meter dash in 11.17 seconds (11.13 prelims). David Soto (Warwick/Warwick Valley) placed 10th overall, and was the third Division III finisher, in the 1,500 meters in 3:59.92, which ranks eighth regionally.

Cortland's remaining schedule includes the AARTFC Outdoor Championships May 19-20 at St. John Fisher and the NCAA Division III Championships May 27-29 in Greensboro, N.C. The top 19 women and top 17 men in individual and multi events, and the top 14 relays for each gender, qualify for the NCAA meet.  (NOTE: This information edited from original story, which had the numbers flipped.)

Coach's Corner - Comments from Cortland Head Coach Steve Patrick:

After a long week of finals (and some stressful internet outages), it was really fantastic to have some strong fields to compete against under very favorable conditions: sunny and warm for a change!

Both Aaron Jones and Brett Morse showed really strong and consistent performances today in the hurdles, which is a great sign of being ready to take the next step forward. Alhagie Sesay and Craig Denton - who both had good performances in the 100 - joined with Jones and Morse to give us a great way to start the day since the quartet ran a fast time on the way to a victory!

David Soto breaking the 4-minute barrier in the 1500 is a great step in the right direction, as is what Dane Sorensen was able to do in the pole vault: he didn't start competing until well after the sun went down and it was getting rather cold! Dane had a great series of jumps, and fantastic attempts at the 5-meter mark, which would have been a new personal record. It's common in the vertical jumps to have a big falling off at new PRs but the way Dane competed is a great sign for the future!

Of course Aubrianna Lantrip clearing 1.70 in the high jump was a big step in the right direction for her season. Bri had a big setback with an injury in the first meet of the year, so to have this result is a great step towards getting back to form and is rather exciting!

It will be great to recover from the end of the semester and to tune up for the upcoming regional championships on Wednesday and Thursday!
