Cortland Men Finish First at Home Snow Flurries Invitational

Sam Zani swam on two winning relay teams and finished second in the 50-yard freestyle
CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland men's swimming and diving team finished in first place out of seven schools at the two-day Snow Flurries Invitational, hosted by the Red Dragons Friday and Saturday at Holsten Pool.
 
Cortland finished with 1,059 points, followed by Oneonta with 639 and Potsdam with 470. Rounding out the field were Fredonia (310), Buffalo State (303), Colby-Sawyer (136) and Jamestown Community College (22).
 
Cortland claimed nine individual and three relay victories during the meet. Hunter Bernhardt (Groton) and Mason Arnberg (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) each posted three wins. Bernhardt won the 500-yard freestyle (4:48.07), 200-yard freestyle (1:45.61) and 1,650-yard freestyle (16:38.60), and Arnberg took top honors in the 200-yard individual medley (2:04.05), 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.40) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.24).
 
Lance Meeson (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) posted the top score in both diving events with 419.55 points on the 1-meter board and 400.35 points on the 3-meter board. Alex Hilldale (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) was second on both boards (330.95 on 1-meter, 356.85 on 3-meter). Dylan Monaco (Lynbrook) won the 400-yard IM in 4:35.11, was second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.32) and placed third in the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:00.18).
 
The combination of Sean Zupko (Montgomery/Valley Central), Arnberg, Ethan Domanico (New Windsor/Newburgh Free Academy) and Sam Zani (Irondequoit) won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:38.69. Zupko, Monaco, Mason Rowlands (Campbell Hall/Washingtonville) and Domanico won the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:21.96), and Zani, Bernhardt, Nick Dambra (Brockport) and Rowlands captured the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:16.96).
 
Zupko placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (55.47) and 200-yard backstroke (2:00.36) and Kellen Dickman (Montgomery/Valley Central) was runner-up in the 200-yard IM (2:04.75) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.47). Dambra finished second in the 400-yard IM (4:35.44) and third in the 200-yard IM (2:06.84), while Lasse Bieder (Cologne, Germany/Apostelgymnasium Köln) was second in the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:51.92) and third in both the 500-yard freestyle (4:56.58) and 200-yard backstroke (2:02.76).
 
Zani finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (22.90) and Jake Bogen (Poughkeepsie/Spackenkill) was second in the 100-yard butterfly (54.47). Ryan Lerner (Washingtonville) placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.05) and Rowlands earned a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (49.33).
 
In addition to Cortland's three relay wins, the Red Dragons earned five other top-three relay finishes. Arnberg, Domanico, Hunter Sugrue-Neuendorf (Valley Cottage/Nyack) and Zani were second in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:30.06), followed by Trent deHaan (Greene), Bernhardt, Lerner and Rowlands in third (1:31.18). The quartet of Zupko, Arnberg, Domanico and Zani were second in the 400-yard medley relay (3:40.67), Bieder, Dickman, Michael Falcone (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) and Rowlands were third in the 200-yard medley relay (1:40.52), and Arnberg, Bogen, Sugrue-Neuendorf and Monaco finished third in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:22.35).
 
Cortland returns to action on January 14 at the RPI Invitational.
