BUFFALO, N.Y. –
Taylor Williams (Slate Hill/Minisink Valley) and
Ashley Zachgo (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) claimed the top two spots in 1-meter diving,
Madi Monaghan (Chili/Gates-Chili) finished second in the 200-yard individual medley, and the 800-yard freestyle relay team finished second to lead Cortland's performances through the first full day of competition at the 2022 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.
Cortland is in second place out of nine schools in the team standings. Geneseo is the leader with 371 points, followed by Cortland (214), Brockport (173) and New Paltz (142). Rounding out the field are Oswego (119), Fredonia (118), Oneonta (96), Buffalo State (79) and Potsdam (69). Competition continues Friday and Saturday at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center.
Williams won the 1-meter crown with a score of 478.35 points, with Zachgo close behind in second with 466.95 points. Monaghan earned the runner-up spot in the 200 IM in 2:10.39.
On Wednesday, in the lone women's event of the day, Cortland's 800-yard freestyle team of
Marissa Kordal (Eden),
Kailyn Anselment (Queensbury/Glens Falls),
Emily Lantry (Massena/St. Lawrence) and Monaghan finished second in 7:54.39. On Thursday,
Nicole Murphy (Saratoga Springs), Anselment,
Sophia Boccio (Garden City) and Monaghan finished third in 1:39.72.
The top three finishers in each event earn All-SUNYAC honors. Winners are first team, runners-up are second team and third-place finishers are third team.
Other Cortland top-eight finishes included the 400-yard medley relay unit of Lantry,
Mackenzie Dickman (Montgomery/Valley Central), Kordal and Monaghan in fourth place (4:09.40),
Nicole Bellettiere (Slate Hill/Minisink Valley) fifth in 1-meter diving (400.90 points), Anselment sixth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:20.74), and Kordal sixth in the 200 IM (2:15.15). Bellettiere qualified for the NCAA diving regionals with her performance.
Lantry won the "B" final of the 500 freestyle in 5:21.12 for a ninth-place overall finish. Cortland also received scoring performances from
Emma Heppner (Orchard Park) in 1-meter diving (11th, 290.35 points), Murphy in the 50-yard freestyle (12th, 25.59),
Caitlin Elsasser (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) in the 200 IM (14th, 2:21.81), and Dickman in the 200 IM (16th, 2:23.55).
