Feast or Famine for Red Dragon Bats in Doubleheader Split at Oneonta

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Cortland softball team scored 11 runs on 18 hits in an 11-5 win over host Oneonta in the opening game of a SUNYAC doubleheader. Oneonta, however, rebounded to earn a 2-0 win in the second game behind a one-hit shutout from Marisa Dionisio.

Cortland (17-11, 8-2 SUNYAC) will travel to New Paltz Saturday for a 12 p.m. league doubleheader.

Cortland 11, Oneonta 5

Cortland trailed 2-1 before breaking out for five runs in the top of the fourth. After the teams each scored once in the fifth, Cortland put up three runs in the sixth to go up 10-3.

Hannah Fairbrother (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) went 4-for-4 with three runs scored, Alyssa Finno (Hurley/Kingston) was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs, Gina Meyers (Liverpool) finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Halle Wright (Ballston Spa) was 3-for-5 with a triple, double, two RBI and two runs.

Also for the visiting Red Dragons, Julz Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) went 2-for-3 with a double, walk, two RBI and a run and McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Brooke Scheibe (Sayville) hit a pinch-hit, two-run single as part of Cortland's five-run fourth.

Cortland starter Karlee Weeden (Maybrook/Valley Central) picked up the win to improve to 9-2. She allowed two runs on three hits with two strikeouts and three walks in four innings.

Oneonta's Gianna Cancelleri was 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and two runs and Caroline Koch, Julz's older sister, went 1-for-3 with a double, two walks and two runs. Julia Serena finished 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBI. Cadence Brennan allowed six runs, but only one earned, over three and two thirds innings to take the loss.

Oneonta 2, Cortland 0

Dionisio, now 6-1 on the spring, was one out from a no-hitter before Koch doubled to right center in the top of the seventh. Dionisio walked two batters and did not strike out anyone.

Isabel Milazzo (Elmira/Elmire Notre Dame) was the hard-luck loser after giving up two runs, one earned, over four innings. She allowed five hits, didn't walk anyone and struck out one batter. Mikayla Pourby (Binghamton) went the final two frames and didn't allow any runs. She gave up two hits, walked one and struck out two.

Oneonta (18-9, 9-3 SUNYAC) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Following an error to allow the first batter to reach and a Marissa Nagel single, Cortland recorded a pair of fielder's choice force outs at third before a double steal and a Sophia Mangone RBI single gave the hosts the lead. Oneonta padded its lead to 2-0 in the fourth when Mangone lead off with a single, was bunted to second by Gianna DiGiovanni and scored on a Victoria Hussey double to right center. Hussey finished the game 3-for-3 and Mangone was 2-for-3.

Cortland managed baserunners in only the fourth and seventh innings. In the fourth, Elaina Ornstein (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) reached on an error to start the inning. After a fielder's choice force out, Wright walked to put runners on first and second, but a flyout and groundout ended the threat. Wright walked to lead off the seventh, but was erased on a double play grounder. Koch followed with her double before a flyout ended the game.
