Red Dragon Men First, Women Second, at Cortland Pumpkin Relays

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland's men's swimming and diving team finished first out of four teams and the women's squad placed second out of four teams at the Cortland Pumpkin Relays, hosted by the Red Dragons at Holsten Pool. 
 
Cortland's men finished with 308 points. New Paltz was second with 201 points, followed by Brockport (144) and Wells (5). In the women's meet, Brockport took the team title with 275 points and Cortland was a close second with 264 points. New Paltz (162) and Wells (27) rounded out the field. 
 
Cortland hosted the relay meet for the fifth straight season (2017-19, 2021-23). The event features an unorthodox format with many relays that are normally not held, including a few three-swimmer events. 
 
In the men's meet, Cortland won eight races and both diving events. The quartet of Makiah Poli (Cortland/Home schooled), Hunter Sugrue-Neuendorf (Valley Cottage/Nyack), Kellen Dickman (Montgomery/Valley Central) and Sam Zani (Irondequoit) won the 400-yard medley relay (3:41.60), followed by Dylan Anselment (Glens Falls), Zani, Jack Clark (Rochester/Aquinas Institute) and Sugrue-Neuendorf with a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:29.96). Jake Bogen (Poughkeepsie/Spackenkill), Poli and Sean Zupko (Montgomery/Valley Central) won the 300-yard backstroke relay (2:55.89) and Dickman, Zani and Dylan Monaco (Lynbrook) took top honors in the 300-yard butterfly relay (2:46.98). 
 
Conner Utter (Manassas, VA/Patriot), Lucas Gannon (Schenectady/Mohonasen), Peter Brelesky (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) and Zupko earned a win in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:40.31). Dickman, Utter and Sugrue-Neuendorf won the 300-yard medley relay (2:54.22) and Poli, Sugrue-Neuendorf, Zani and Clark won the 200-yard medley relay (1:41.20). Zani earned his fifth win of the day when he teamed with Hunter Bernhardt (Groton), Brelesky and Mason Rowlands (Campbell Hall/Washingtonville) to capture the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:22.66). 
 
Kevin Kohlhoff (West Islip) was the winner in 1-meter diving (294.45 points) and 3-meter diving (285.20 points), with both of his scores meeting NCAA regional qualifying standards. Lance Meeson (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was second on both boards (280.15 points on 1-meter, 268.10 points on 3-meter), with his 1-meter effort hitting the NCAA mark. 
 
On the women's side, Cortland won seven events, starting with Julia Bryce (Rochester/School of the Arts), Alayna Miller (Hilton), Kaitlyn Devaney (Lynbrook) and Leah Bernhardt (Groton) taking the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:44.83). Ella Garrow (Peru), Mackenzie Dickman (Montgomery/Valley Central) and Bernhardt won the 300-yard breaststroke relay (3:42.71) and Bryce, Caitlin Elsasser (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) and Areiannah Martinez-Reyes (Queens/Benjamin Cardozo) won the 300-yard butterfly relay (3:10.11). 
 
The foursome of Sophie Amering (Rochester/Hilton), Rhianna Lynch (New Hartford), Angie Gittschau (Camillus/West Genesee) and Bernhardt won the 800-yard freestyle relay (8:34.23), while Dickman, Bryce and Garrow won the 300-yard medley relay (3:19.59). Devaney, Garrow, Bryce and Miller finished first in the 200-yard medley relay (1:56.14), and Amering, Bryce, Devaney and Martinez-Reyes won the 400-yard freestyle (3:52.29), with Bryce picking up her fifth win of the afternoon in the process.

(Divers at Colgate)

On Friday evening, Cortland sent divers to compete in a meet at Colgate featuring the Division I Raiders along with Division I Le Moyne College. Kaz Kadota-Browner (Jericho) won the men's 1-meter board in a field of eight divers with 250.15 points, followed by Kohlhoff in second with 247.65 points. Kohlhoff won the 3-meter board (279.65 points), followed by Meeson in second (241.50 points), in a field of seven divers. Madison Heffern (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert Christian) was Cortland's top performer on the women's side with a fourth-place showing out of six on the 1-meter board (173.25 points) and a fifth-place finish out of six on the 3-meter board (143.80 points).
