ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Cortland men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened theirs 2024-25 season with dual-meet losses at the University of Rochester. Rochester won the men's meet, 186-110, and the women's meet, 226.5-73.5.
Cortland won four events on the men's side.
Dylan Anselment (Glens Falls) won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.64 seconds and
Kellen Dickman (Montgomery/Valley Central) was victorious in the 100-yard butterfly in 52.62 seconds. Anselment,
Jack Clark (Rochester/Aquinas Institute),
Mason Rowlands (Campbell Hall/Washingtonville) and
Hunter Sugrue-Neuendorf (Valley Cottage/Nyack) won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:27.43, nipping the Yellowjackets' top entry by three hundredths of a second.
Kevin Kohlhoff (West Islip) won 1-meter diving with a score of 294.60 points, giving him his first NCAA regional qualifying mark of the season. Divers need to reach regional standards twice during the regular season, or once in a conference championship, to qualify for regionals.
Dickman finished second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.59) in addition to his win in the 100 fly, and
Makiah Poli (Cortland/Home schooled) was second in both the 200-yard breaststroke (2:17.52) and 200-yard individual medley (2:06.56). Clark was second in the 50-yard freestyle (22.02),
Alex Hilldale (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) was runner-up in 1-meter diving (252.45 points), and
Sean Zupko (Montgomery/Valley Central) placed second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.39).
Cortland's women earned one victory and three runner-up finishes.
Leah Bernhardt (Groton) won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:19.52.
Ryann Redmond (Floral Park/Floral Park Memorial) was second in both the 1,000 free (11:20.02) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:30.90), and
Alayna Miller (Hilton) finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (25.49).
Cortland hosts Alfred State in dual-meet action next Saturday at 1 p.m.
