Cortland's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Sam Zani, Dylan Anselment, Jack Clark and Hunter Sugrue-Neuendorf finished in second place
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Cortland sits in second place out of eight schools after the first full day of the 2024 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.
Geneseo leads the team standings with 364 points, followed by Cortland with 257. New Paltz (147) and Oneonta (131) hold the third and fourth spots, followed by Oswego (113), Brockport (104), Potsdam (94) and Fredonia (81). The competition continues Friday and Saturday at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center.
Hunter Bernhardt (Groton) finished second Thursday in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:37.00 and the 200-yard freestyle relay squad of
Jack Clark (Rochester/Aquinas Institute),
Sam Zani (Irondequoit),
Dylan Anselment (Glens Falls) and
Hunter Sugrue-Neuendorf (Valley Cottage/Nyack) placed second (1:23.23).
On Wednesday, Zani, Bernhardt,
Sean Zupko (Montgomery/Valley Central) and
Mason Rowlands (Campbell Hall/Washingtonville) placed second in the 800-yard freestyle relay (6:59.32),
Makiah Poli (Cortland/Home schooled), Sugrue-Neuendorf,
Kellen Dickman (Montgomery/Valley Central) and Clark were third in the 200-yard medley relay (1:34.54), and
Lance Meeson (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) finished fourth in 3-meter diving (484.90 pts., 498.30 pts. prelims). Also in that diving event,
Alex Hilldale (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) finished sixth (415.60 pts., 416.85 pts. prelims) and
Calvin Eggleston (Antwerp/Indian River) placed seventh (347.60 pts., 363.55 pts. prelims).
Cortland's other top-eight finishers, all on Thursday, included Clark fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (20.99), Zupko fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (4:45.61, 4:44.41 prelims), Zani sixth in the 50 free (21.19, 21.01 prelims), Anselment seventh in the 50 free (21.41, 21.39 prelims), Rowlands seventh in the 500 free (4:50.54) and Dickman seventh in the 200 IM (1:56.91).
Other scorers on Thursday were
Dylan Monaco (Lynbrook) in 10th place in the 500 free (4:56.02), Poli in 10th in the 200 IM (1:58.28),
Lucas Gannon (Schenectady/Mohonasen) in 11th in the 500 free (4:56.03, 4:54.59 prelims), Sugrue-Neuendorf in 15th in the 50 free (22.07, 21.79 prelims), and
Euan Barclay (Groton) in 16th in the 500 free (5:04.22, 5:02.10 prelims).
