BUFFALO, N.Y. –
Kellen Dickman (Montgomery/Valley Central) broke the Cortland school record in the 100-yard butterfly during the second full day of competition at the 2024 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.
Cortland is strongly in second place out of eight schools in the team standings. Geneseo leads with 725 points, followed by Cortland at 488 and New Paltz at 318. Rounding out the field are Oneonta (231), Oswego (200), Brockport (170), Potsdam (152) and Fredonia (114). The championship concludes on Saturday at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center.
Dickman set the school record during the 100-yard butterfly prelims with a time of 50.13 seconds, then broke it again in the finals with his second-place time of 50.00 seconds. The previous school mark was 50.52 seconds by Dan Evans in 2010.
Hunter Bernhardt (Groton) finished third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.13 and the 400-yard medley relay team of
Sean Zupko (Montgomery/Valley Central),
Hunter Sugrue-Neuendorf (Valley Cottage/Nyack), Dickman and
Sam Zani (Irondequoit) placed third in 3:30.05.
The top three finishers in each event earn All-SUNYAC honors. Winners are first team, runners-up are second team and third-place finishers are third team.
Lance Meeson (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) finished fourth in 1-meter diving with 464.85 points, followed by
Alex Hilldale (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) in sixth (361.45 points, 410.50 in prelims) and
Calvin Eggleston (Antwerp/Indian River) in seventh (337.20 points, 371.10 points in prelims). Dickman was one of three Red Dragons in the 100-yard butterfly finals.
Ethan Domanico (New Windsor/Newburgh Free Academy) finished in fifth place (51.24) and
Dylan Monaco (Lynbrook) was eighth (52.60). Zupko finished sixth (53.34, 53.23 prelims) and
Makiah Poli (Cortland/Home schooled) was seventh (53.59, 52.62 prelims) in the 100-yard backstroke,
Jack Pagel (Cortlandt Manor/Walter Panas) placed sixth in the 400-yard individual medley (4:24.99), and
Mason Rowlands (Campbell Hall/Washingtonville) finished eighth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.18, 1:45.04 prelims).
Conner Utter (Manassas, VA/Patriot) won the "B" final in the 400 IM in 4:29.11 for a ninth-place overall finish.
Jack Clark (Rochester/Aquinas Institute) finished 11th in the 200 freestyle (1:46.94), Sugrue-Neuendorf was 11th in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.02), Zani placed 11th in the 100 butterfly (53.54) and
Lucas Gannon (Schenectady/Mohonasen) was 11th in the 400 IM (4:30.98). Domanico turned in a 12th-place finish in the 100 backstroke (55.20, 54.64 prelims) and
Jake Bogen (Poughkeepsie/Spackenkill) finished 13th both the 100 backstroke (55.65) and 100 butterfly (54.28). Other Cortland scorers included
Dylan Anselment (Glens Falls) in 14th place in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.62),
Euan Barclay (Groton) in 15th place in the 400 IM (4:39.90, 4:39.43 prelims) and Pagel in 16th place in the 100 backstroke (56.49, 56.28 prelims).
