BUFFALO, N.Y. – Cortland finished in second place out of eight schools at the 2024 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Swimming and Diving Championships. The four-day meet concluded on Saturday at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center.
The Red Dragons were league runner-up for the fifth time in the past six SUNYAC meets, and Cortland has finished in the top four at each of the last 20 SUNYAC championships. Geneseo on its 10th straight league crown with 1,032 points, followed by Cortland easily in second place with 701 points. New Paltz placed third with 470 points, followed by Oneonta (340), Oswego (294), Brockport (232), Potsdam (197) and Fredonia (142).
Hunter Bernhardt (Groton) finished second in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 16:18.26, and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of
Sam Zani (Irondequoit),
Jack Clark (Rochester/Aquinas Institute),
Hunter Sugrue-Neuendorf (Valley Cottage/Nyack) and
Dylan Anselment (Glens Falls) placed third in 3:08.36.
The top three finishers in each event earn All-SUNYAC honors. Winners are first team, runners-up are second team and third-place finishers are third team.
Sean Zupko (Montgomery/Valley Central) finished fourth in the 200-yard backstroke (1:56.35, 1:55.99 prelims) and
Kellen Dickman (Montgomery/Valley Central) was fourth in the 200-yard butterfly (1:56.49).
Mason Rowlands (Campbell Hall/Washingtonville) placed fifth in the 1,650 freestyle (16:51.38), Zani was sixth in the 100-yard freestyle (46.86, 46.71 prelims),
Makiah Poli (Cortland/Home schooled) was sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:10.63) and
Dylan Monaco (Lynbrook) finished sixth in the 200 butterfly (1:57.55).
Lucas Gannon (Schenectady/Mohonasen) placed seventh in the 1,650 freestyle (17:09.31). Clark posted an eighth-place showing in the 100 freestyle (47.49, 47.36 prelims) and
Jack Pagel (Cortlandt Manor) was eighth in the 200 backstroke (2:01.55).
Two Red Dragons won "B" finals races to earn ninth-place overall finishes -
Jake Bogen (Poughkeepsie/Spackenkill) in the 200 backstroke (2:03.70) and
Ethan Domanico (New Windsor/Newburgh Free Academy) in the 200 butterfly (1:59.03). Other Red Dragons scoring at the meet included:
Euan Barclay (Groton) in 10th place in the 1,650 freestyle (17:41.10);
Conner Utter (Manassas, VA/Patriot) in 10th in the 200 backstroke (2:04.14);
Michael Tomasino (Lake Grove/Sachem North) in 11th in the 200 butterfly (2:03.27); Anselment in 12th in the 100 freestyle (48.22, 48.12 prelims); and Sugrue-Neuendorf in 13th in the 100 freestyle (48.54, 48.31 prelims).
