CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland men's and women's swimming and diving teams celebrated Senior Day with dual-meet victories over visiting Fredonia. The men were victorious, 195-43, and the women posted a 182-85 victory.
Ten Cortland seniors were recognized prior to the meet -
Mackenzie Dickman (Montgomery/Valley Central),
Amanda Hain (Kings Park),
Madison Heffern (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert Christian),
Emily Lantry (Helena/St. Lawrence) and
Madi Monaghan (Chili/Gates-Chili) for the women, and
Hunter Bernhardt (Groton),
Jake Bogen (Poughkeepsie/Spackenkill),
Lance Meeson (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa),
Chris Mueller (Penfield) and
Sam Zani (Irondequoit) for the men. Hain was unable to attend due to student teaching responsibilities.
Cortland returns to action Feb. 21-24 at the SUNYAC Championships in Buffalo.
Men's Recap:
Meeson turned in the top performance of the day, setting the school record in 3-meter diving (six dives) with a winning score of 362.48 points. The previous mark of 335.20 points was set by Jeff Holden in 1984. Meeson almost eclipsed the six-dive record on the 1-meter board as well; he won with a score of 320.10 points, less than two points from the school mark.
Bernhardt,
Makiah Poli (Cortland/Home schooled),
Hunter Sugrue-Neuendorf (Valley Cottage/Nyack) and
Harrison Bubel (Saugerties) also were double winners. Bernhardt recorded the best times in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:01.81) and 500-yard freestyle (4:51.49). Poli won the 100-yard backstroke (56.03) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.85), Sugrue-Neuendorf won the 50-yard freestyle (22.34) and 100-yard freestyle (49.52), and Bubel was victorious in the 500-yard freestyle (4:51.49) and 100-yard butterfly (55.12).
Zani won the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.72) and
Dylan Anselment (Glens Falls) was the 100-yard breaststroke winner (1:06.38).
Dylan Monaco (Lynbrook) took top honors in the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.76) and
Sean Zupko (Montgomery/Valley Central) won the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.34).
Cortland opened the meet with a win by Poli, Anselment, Bubel and Sugrue-Neuendorf in the 200-yard medley relay (1:42.04). The combination of Bernhardt,
Ethan Domanico (New Windsor/Newburgh Free Academy), Sugrue-Neuendorf and Anselment won the 200-yard freestyle as an exhibition entry (1:29.43).
Women's Recap:
Cortland's victory was highlighted by a number of multiple winners.
Julia Bryce (Rochester/School of the Arts) won the 200-yard butterfly (2:15.86) as well as turning in the top time as an exhibition entry in both the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.25) and 200-yard individual medley (2:20.40).
Leah Bernhardt (Groton) won the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.01) and 500-yard freestyle (5:28.19) and
Rhianna Lynch (New Hartford) captured the 100-yard backstroke (1:08.54) and 50-yard freestyle (26.78).
Ella Garrow (Peru) won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.90) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:31.74) and
Alyssa Haberlack was the top performer in both 3-meter diving (234.98 points) and 1-meter diving (234.53 points).
Dickman was victorious in the 200-yard backstroke (2:28.93).
Emily Lantry (Helena/St. Lawrence) touched the wall first in the 100-yard freestyle (56.91) and
Angie Gittschau (Camillus/West Genesee) won the 1,650-yard freestyle (19:37.41).
Cortland began the day with a win by
Areiannah Martinez-Reyes (Queens/Benjamin Cardozo), Garrow,
Alayna Miller (Hilton) and
Kaila O'Hara (East Islip) in the 200-yard medley relay (1:55.46). The Red Dragons wrapped up the afternoon with an exhibition win by Lynch,
Anna Stahurski (Oakdale/Connetquot), Garrow and Miller in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:45.42).
