Cortland Battles Past Oswego, 68-56

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Joleen Lusk (Cherry Valley/Cherry Valley-Springfield) and Kayla Campbell (Franklin/Franklin Central) each scored 16 points as the Cortland women's basketball team defeated visiting Oswego, 68-56, in SUNYAC action.
 
Cortland improved to 10-2 overall and maintained its lead in the conference with a 5-0 record. Oswego fell to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
 
Lusk finished with 16 points, 13 rebounds and three assists. Campbell scored seven of her 16 points in the fourth quarter and finished 6-of-10 from the floor. Kaeli McAnally (Islip) made 4-of-5 shots and ended with 12 points and four assists, Jackie Funk (Penfield) added nine points and three assists and Bella Zingoni (Kings Park/Long Island Lutheran) tallied eight points on 3-of-4 shooting.
 
Giavanna White-Principio finished with 18 points and 15 rebounds and Shania Iglesias scored 18 points for the Lakers. Macey Deordio added 14 points and four steals and Sydney Hoefs dished out three assists.
 
Cortland never trailed in the game, but didn't fully take control until the final quarter. Oswego scored the final eight points of the first quarter to draw within 20-18 and tied the game on a basket by White-Principio less than two minutes into the second quarter. The Red Dragons established a 36-30 halftime lead with seven of the last nine points in the half, capped by a Zingoni 3-pointer.
 
Cortland held a 45-34 lead with 6:51 remaining in the third, but Oswego fought back to within four points later in the period and trailed 52-45 after three quarters. The game was still at an 8-point margin at 63-55 with four minutes left before Cortland closed the game on a 5-1 run.
 
Cortland shot 46 percent from the field, including 50 percent in the first half, and the Red Dragons made their first 12 free throws and ended 12-of-15 from the stripe. Oswego shot 34 percent from the field and 10-of-13 from the foul line.
 
Cortland will travel to Buffalo State for a league game Tuesday at 4 p.m.
