Cortland Uses Strong Defensive Showing to Defeat Host Buffalo State, 72-31

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Cortland held Buffalo State to 15 points over the game's final 26 minutes and the Red Dragons defeated the Bengals, 72-31, in SUNYAC women's basketball action.
 
Cortland (11-2, 6-0 SUNYAC) was led by Brooke Tillotson (Marathon) with 14 points. She also grabbed five rebounds. Jackie Funk (Penfield) made both of her 3-point attempts and finished with 11 points and Joleen Lusk (Cherry Valley/Cherry Valley-Springfield) rang up 10 points, six rebounds and two assists.
 
Sophie Bissaillon (East Greenbush/Columbia) added eight points and Lily Woodis (Dewittville/Chautauqua Lake) scored six points and led the Red Dragons with 10 rebounds. Kayla Campbell (Franklin/Franklin Central) had four rebounds.
 
Maddy Stearns, Adiya Jones and Morgan Popp scored six points each for Buffalo State (4-9, 1-5 SUNYAC). Ashley Tucker led the Bengals with seven rebounds, Mya Brown grabbed six rebounds and Stearns led the team with four steals.
 
Buffalo State led 8-7 after one quarter and 16-13 with 6:14 left in the second. Cortland, however, finished the half on a 16-0 run to take a 29-16 halftime lead. The lead grew to 56-24 after three quarters.
 
Cortland shot just 15 percent (2-for-13) in the first quarter but connected on 60 percent of its shots in the second and 67 percent in the third and ended the game at 47 percent. Buffalo State shot 38 percent in the first period but just 9-of-37 the rest of the way and finished at 27 percent overall.
 
Cortland will travel to New Paltz Friday and Oneonta Saturday for SUNYAC games.
