Cortland Wins Big at Plattsburgh, Takes Over SUNYAC Lead

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Kayla Campbell (Franklin/Franklin Central) matched her career high with 25 points and Cortland held Plattsburgh scoreless for more than a 10-minute stretch between the first and second quarters as the Red Dragons defeated host Plattsburgh, 86-47, in a SUNYAC women's basketball matchup.

Cortland improved to 15-3 overall and 10-1 in the conference. The win, combined with a New Paltz loss at Buffalo State, propelled the Red Dragons into first place in the SUNYAC standings, a half game ahead of New Paltz's 10-2 record.

Campbell shot 10-of-19 from the field and finished the game with eight rebounds, four steals, three assists and two blocks. Jackie Funk (Penfield) scored 14 points and grabbed four rebounds, Brooke Tillotson (Marathon) made 5-of-9 shots and amassed 12 points and two steals, and Joleen Lusk (Cherry Valley/Cherry Valley-Springfield) hit 3-of-4 shots and ended with 10 points and five rebounds.

Kaeli McAnally (Islip) finished with six rebounds and four assists. Sam Dembinsky (Wallkill) hit all three of her shots and ended with nine points.

Plattsburgh (10-8, 6-5 SUNYAC) was led by Imani Walcott with 14 points and five rebounds, Rosie Sculco with 12 points and Jaden Wilson with six rebounds.

Cortland led 17-12 with 3:40 left in the first quarter before scoring the final eight points of the quarter to take a 25-12 lead. Campbell scored 14 points and Tillotson tallied nine points to account for 23 of Cortland's 25 points in the period.

The Red Dragons then scored the first 10 points of the second quarter and kept the Cardinals off the board until the 3:22 mark. Cortland led 39-19 at halftime and by at least 18 points the entire second half.

Cortland shot 67 percent (12-of-18) in the first quarter and finished at 49 percent. Plattsburgh hit 5-of-9 shots in the first period but only 11-of-42 the rest of the way to finish at 31 percent.

Cortland held a 23-2 advantage in points off of turnovers. The Red Dragons turned the ball over only six times compared to 21 Plattsburgh giveaways.
