Cortland Shuts Down Fredonia Late in 52-42 Road Victory

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Cortland outscored host Fredonia 11-2 in the fourth quarter and held the Blue Devils scoreless for the game's final eight minutes and 49 seconds as the Red Dragons earned a 52-42 victory in SUNYAC women's basketball action. Cortland improved to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference. Fredonia is now 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the league.
 
Brooke Tillotson (Marathon) finished with 11 points, four rebounds and two steals and Kayla Campbell (Franklin/Franklin Central) had 10 points, six rebounds and four steals for Cortland. Kaeli McAnally (Islip) amassed eight points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals, Joleen Lusk (Cherry Valley/Cherry Valley-Springfield) had six rebounds and two blocked shots, Bella Zingoni (Kings Park/Long Island Lutheran) finished with five rebounds and three assists and Sophie Bissaillon (East Greenbush/Columbia) had three steals.
 
Allie Wandell, Fredonia's lone double-figure scorer, ended with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Mary Culeton grabbed eight rebounds and dished out two assists and Jayssa Snelick had three assists.
 
Cortland led 15-9 after one quarter, but Fredonia outscored the Red Dragons 20-9 in the second period to take a 29-24 halftime lead. Cortland gained a 41-40 lead after three quarters and held Fredonia to 1-for-12 shooting in the fourth. McAnally's layup with 4:26 left gave the Red Dragons a 48-42 lead. The score didn't change again until a Tillotson free throw with less than a minute left, and Tillotson and Bissaillon each added a free throw to create the final margin.
 
Cortland shot 39 percent from the floor and Fredonia ended at 31 percent. Each team committed 25 turnovers.
 
Cortland host Canton, one of two new SUNYAC members this season (along with Morrisville), on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
