BUFFALO, NY –
Julia DeTurris (Hicksville) scored for the second consecutive game, and
Gianna Cirilla (Pattersonville/Schalmont) also scored a goal, as the Cortland women's soccer team earned a 2-0 road win at Buffalo State on Saturday afternoon in State University of New York Athletic Conference play. Cortland improves to 7-2-3 (3-0-1 SUNYAC), while Buffalo State drops to 5-3-2 (3-1-1 SUNYAC) with the defeat.
Cirilla's goal was her team-leading fifth goal of the season, while DeTurris scored for the second time on the year.
Piper Klammer (Mahopac),
Tyla Vuotto (Lynbrook), and
Katie Diem (Fairport) were each credited with an assist.
Olivia Rouse (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) made five saves in goal as Cortland posted its seventh consecutive shutout and extended its shutout streak to 654:11 of game action.
Gwen Jarosz registered two shots on goal to lead the Bengals. Addy Williams made four saves in 68:33 in goal and Taylor Clisson made one stop over the final 21:27.
Buffalo State earned a corner in the opening minute of play, and on the ensuing play Emily Maczka sent a shot from the right side that Rouse initially bobbled but was able to collect for the save.
Cirilla nearly gave the Red Dragons the lead in the 11th minute, firing a shot from the edge of the 18-yard area that bounced off the crossbar and over the goal.
DeTurris subbed into the game in the 29th minute and immediately made an impact by scoring the opening goal of the contest in the 34th minute. Klammer drove down the right side of the field and sent a shot that Williams was able to save, but DeTurris pounced on the rebound and fired low and into the bottom of the net for the goal.
The Red Dragons nearly doubled their advantage just before halftime, but
Avery Rich's (Ilion/Central Valley Academy) free-kick shot in the 44th minute went off the right post.
Cirilla added an insurance goal for Cortland in the 54th minute. The Red Dragons were awarded a free kick near midfield after a foul by the Bengals. Diem sent a long ball to the edge of the box, where Vuotto flicked a header on towards the Buffalo State goal. Cirilla was the first to react and poked a shot low and into the goal beyond an onrushing Williams to make it 2-0.
The Red Dragon defense held Buffalo State to just two shots on goal in the second half, with Rouse comfortably able to save each of the shots. The Bengals had one final opportunity to break up the shutout in the closing seconds, but Kaylee Valentic headed a shot over the crossbar as time expired.
