Cortland Posts Eighth Straight Shutout in 2-0 Win Over Fredonia

CORTLAND, NY – The Cortland women's soccer team netted a goal in each half, and earned a 2-0 win over Fredonia in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Holloway Field on Wednesday evening. The Red Dragons improved to 8-2-3 (4-0-1 SUNYAC), while Fredonia is now 6-5-4 (3-2-1 SUNYAC).

Tyla Vuotto (Lynbrook) contributed to both Cortland goals with a goal and an assist, while Gianna Cirilla (Pattersonville/Schalmont) added her team-leading sixth goal of the year for the game-winning goal. Julia DeTurris (Hicksville) registered a point for the third consecutive game with an assist.

Olivia Rouse (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) had her eighth consecutive shutout for Cortland, making four saves in goal. Cortland's eight consecutive shutouts are tied for the second most in program history. The 1978 Red Dragons hold the record for consecutive shutouts at nine, coincidentally in the first nine games of varsity women's soccer at Cortland.

Fredonia's Casey Fetzner made 12 saves in goal for the Blue Devils, and Gabrielle Irwin and Bronwyn Madden each had two shots on target.

Fredonia had one of the best opportunities to open the scoring in the 15th minute, but Rouse made a solid diving save to deny Irwin.

Cortland had a chance in the 40th minute denied by Fetzner with a kick save to stop Sage Luke (Schenectady/Scotia-Glenville).

The Red Dragons broke the scoreless tie in the 44th minute. Vuotto collected the ball near midfield and sent a through ball behind the Fredonia defense. Cirilla sprinted to the ball and deposited a left-footed shot into the top right corner of the net with a brilliant finish to give Cortland a 1-0 lead at halftime.

In the 48th minute, Vuotto sent a shot just off to the right of the post.

Irwin nearly equalized for the Blue Devils in the 53rd minute, but her shot from the right side struck the crossbar and the Red Dragons were able to clear the danger. One minute later, Maia Allard (Castleton/Columbia) made a pair of strong defensive plays to stop a scoring chance for Fredonia.

Fetzner made a pair of excellent saves in quick succession in the 57th minute, parrying a shot from Vuotto off the right post with a diving save and then making a save on Cirilla on the follow-up shot.

In the 73rd minute, Devyn Kelly (Wappingers Falls/Beacon) sent a deep cross out to the right side to Leah Rehm (East Syracuse/East Syracuse-Minoa), who sent a drop pass back to Vuotto. Vuotto fired a shot towards the bottom right corner of the net, but Fetzner came up with another diving save.

Cortland finally added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute. DeTurris sent a high cross from a corner kick that floated off the fingertips of Fetzner and to the left post, where Vuotto was waiting to tap a shot into the back of the net for her third goal of the season.

Rouse made one final save on a shot by Madden in the 86th minute, and Cortland was able to secure the 2-0 victory.
