MORRISVILLE, NY – Five different players scored a goal, and the Red Dragon defense posted its ninth consecutive shutout, as the Cortland women's soccer team eased to a 5-0 road win at Morrisville in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Saturday afternoon. Cortland improves to 9-2-3 (5-0-1 SUNYAC), while Morrisville falls to 3-9-1 (1-6-0 SUNYAC).
Gianna Cirilla (Pattersonville/Schalmont) scored for the third straight game.
Julia DeTurris (Hicksville) and
Katie Diem (Fairport) both netted their third goals of the season, and
Devyn Kelly (Wappingers Falls/Beacon) and
Jordyn Chrysler (Voorheesville/Clayton A. Bouton) scored their first goals of the season.
Piper Klammer (Mahopac),
Sage Luke (Schenectady/Scotia-Glenville),
Cassia Schuyler (Cincinnatus), and
Gigi Piscopiello (Stony Point/North Rockland) each tallied an assist.
Olivia Rouse (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) made one save in over 73 minutes of action in goal, and
Nicole Blazo (Massapequa/St. Anthony's) supervised the final 16+ minutes for the combined shutout. Cortland matched the program record with its ninth consecutive shutout, and has not conceded a goal in 834:11 of game action.
Alyssa Denton made 18 saves in goal for Morrisville, and Hailey Buysse recorded the lone shot on goal for the Mustangs.
Cortland opened the scoring just over six minutes into the contest, and Cirilla fired a shot just under the crossbar after a cross from the right side from Schuyler.
Buysse recorded a shot on goal for Morrisville in the 19th minute that Rouse was able to save to preserve the Cortland lead.
The Red Dragons doubled their lead in the 27th minute, as Klammer sent a feed to the middle of the field just inside the 6-yard box and DeTurris was able to tap it home for her third goal in the last four games to make it 2-0 into halftime.
Cortland made it a three-goal advantage in the 66th minute, as Kelly headed home a shot off of a cross on a corner kick from Piscopiello. It was Piscopiello's first point of the season, and Kelly's third goal of her career.
The Red Dragons put the game out of reach with a pair of goals in the final 11 minutes of the game, with Chrysler netting her first collegiate goal from in close after a chipped pass from Luke at the edge of the 18-yard area to make it 4-0 in the 80th minute. Diem fired in a free-kick goal in the 86th minute that bounced off the hands of Denton and into the net to complete the scoring.
