Red Dragons Win 2-0 at Oswego

OSWEGO, NY – The Cortland women's soccer team scored a goal in each half, and kept its sixth consecutive clean sheet, in a 2-0 road win at Oswego in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Wednesday evening. Cortland improves to 6-2-3 (2-0-1 SUNYAC), while Oswego falls to 5-4-2 (2-1-1 SUNYAC).

Julia DeTurris (Hicksville) scored her first goal of the season, while Katie Diem (Fairport) converted a penalty kick for the second consecutive game for the Red Dragons.

Olivia Rouse (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) made seven saves in goal for her seventh shutout of the year, and the Cortland defense has not conceded a goal in the last 564:11 of game action.

Kaylee Elliott and Brianna Winkler led the Lakers with two shots on goal apiece, and Paytyn Crane stopped two shots for Oswego.

After each team failed to record a shot on target in the opening 20 minutes of the contest,  Oswego forced Rouse into making three saves in the next 10 minutes, two saves on shots by Elliott in the 22nd and 27th minutes another on a shot by Amber McDermott in the 23rd minute.

The Red Dragons scored on their only shot on target of the first half in the 32nd minute. DeTurris collected a pass about 25 yards for the Oswego goal, dribbled around a defender, and smashed a left-footed shot into the top right corner of the net to give Cortland a 1-0 advantage.

Rouse made one more save in the 40th minute to keep the Red Dragons' lead into halftime.

Rouse was quick off her line in the opening minute of the second half to deny Winkler an opportunity to tie the score, making a lunging save after Winkler received a pass over the top of the Cortland defense and was one-on-one with the Cortland keeper.

The Red Dragons were awarded a penalty kick in the 58th minute, as Nyah Sinkler (Farmingville/Sachem East) delivered a lofted pass towards Gianna Cirilla (Pattersonville/Schalmont) in front of the Oswego goal. As Cirilla attempted to collect the ball and fire a shot into the goal, she was fouled from behind by a Laker defender. Diem shot low and into the bottom right corner of the net on her penalty kick to double the Cortland lead.

The Red Dragon defense allowed just one shot on goal over the final 35 minutes of the game, and Rouse made her seventh save on a shot by Winkler in the 82nd minute to secure the shutout victory.
