Cortland Takes Charge in Second Quarter in 67-41 Win vs. Morrisville

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland outscored Morrisville 17-4 over the final eight minutes of the second quarter to take a 15-point halftime lead and the Red Dragons maintained their lead in the SUNYAC with a 67-41 win over the visiting Mustangs.
 
Cortland is now 18-3 overall and 13-1 in the conference, a game ahead of New Paltz (12-2), the only league team to defeat Cortland thus far. Cortland will host Oneonta next Friday and New Paltz next Saturday.
 
Kayla Campbell (Franklin/Franklin Central) led the Red Dragons with 17 points on 8-of-14 shooting. She grabbed seven rebounds and handed out four assists. Mariah Huss (Buffalo/Sacred Heart Academy) made 5-of-6 shots overall and 3-of-4 from the 3-point arc and ended with a career-high 13 points. She also had four assists and three rebounds.
 
Jackie Funk (Penfield) finished with 10 points, four rebounds and three assists and Joleen Lusk (Cherry Valley/Cherry Valley-Springfield) registered eight points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Brooke Tillotson (Marathon) added three assists and Sophie Bissaillon (East Greenbush/Columbia) hauled in five rebounds.
 
Anyssia Ingersoll scored 15 points and Kieonna Christmas finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals for Morrisville (5-15, 2-11 SUNYAC).
 
Morrisville closed an early 13-5 deficit to 13-11 after one quarter, and the Mustangs were down 15-13 with 8:22 left in the second. Cortland used baskets by Lusk and Huss to go up by six, and after a Morrisville basket the Red Dragons scored 13 straight points to go up 32-15. The Red Dragons led 32-17 at halftime, by at least 14 in the third quarter and by 20 or more points almost the entire fourth quarter.
 
Cortland shot 43 percent from the field and 33 percent (8-of-24) from the 3-point arc. Morrisville finished at 28 percent both overall and from long distance. The game featured only a combined 12 fouls, seven versus Cortland and five against Morrisville, and only six free throws, all by Cortland (3-for-6).
