PLATTSBURGH, NY – The Cortland men's lacrosse team, ranked 18th nationally by USILA, scored its most goals in a game since 2008, and cruised to a 26-7 victory at Plattsburgh in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Saturday afternoon. Cortland improves to 9-2 (2-0 SUNYAC) on the year, while Plattsburgh drops to 4-4 (0-1 SUNYAC).
Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) led Cortland with eight points on four goals and four assists.
Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover) provided four goals and three assists, and
Liam Burns (Warners/West Genesee) scored four times with one assist.
Tucker Macknik (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and
Dino Bowen (Yorktown) each recorded two caused turnovers for the Red Dragons, while
Travis Wagner (Penfield) earned the win in goal by making 10 saves in three quarters of action.
Plattsburgh was led by Peter Urso with two goals and an assist, while Dylan Ruland scored twice.
The Cardinals took an early lead just 1:06 into the contest on a goal by Ruland, before Cortland scored five straight goals to go up 5-1 with 6:27 remaining. Kavanagh netted a man-up goal off a feed from Rothman, and
Frank Neeson (Orchard Park) provided assists the next two goals by
Klay Stuver (Fairport) and Rothman.
Caden Morra (Farmingdale/Plainedge) and
Caden Yancey (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) each found the back of the net for Cortland's four-goal advantage.
Over the final minutes of the quarter, Plattsburgh and Cortland each scored twice, with the Red Dragons getting goals by
Matt Franzoni (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan) off a feed from
Nathan Nagengast (Bay Shore) and Burns.
Cortland outscored Plattsburgh 7-2 in the second quarter, including scoring the first five goals of the period to go ahead 12-3 after two goals by Rothman, and one goal each by Kavanagh, Burns, and
Alex Thrasher (Vestal). Thrasher's goal was his first of the season.
After a pair of Plattsburgh goals, Rothman and Burns added a goal apiece in the final 3:27 to give Cortland a 14-5 halftime advantage.
The Red Dragons extended the lead to 20-6 after three quarters, with Neeson and Kavanagh both scoring twice in the period, Burns scoring his fourth goal of the game, and Morra adding his second goal of the game.
