BUFFALO, NY – The Cortland women's hockey team erased a three-goal deficit to earn a 5-4 victory at Buffalo State in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Saturday afternoon.
Cortland improves to 9-5-2 (3-2-1 SUNYAC) with its fourth consecutive victory, while Buffalo State drops to 10-6-1 (2-4-0 SUNYAC).
Kira Cook (Lake Ronkonkoma/Northwood School) and
Katie Mahoney (Toronto, ON/Toronto Leaside Junior) each netted a pair of goals for the Red Dragons, with Mahoney also adding an assist.
Katie Diem (Fairport/Niagara University) added the go-ahead goal for Cortland in the third period.
Carlen Bertrand (Timmins, ON/MCLA) provided three assists, while
Ainsley Delacourt (Stoney Creek, ON/Brampton Canadettes U22AA) and
Fanny Aneborn (Linkoping, Sweden/Lulea HF Sweden) each contributed two assists.
Isabelle Deutz (Marshall, MN/Gentry Academy) earned her first career victory for Cortland, making 16 saves and allowing just one goal over the final 30:29. Deutz also provided an assist on Cortland's fourth goal for her first collegiate point.
Sydney Radecki and Dakota Carlson each netted two goals for Buffalo State, while Alexa Todd made 36 saves in goal in a losing effort for the Bengals.
Cortland had the first five shots on goal of the contest over the opening five minutes, but Todd was able to make multiple strong saves to keep the game scoreless.
Buffalo State got on the board first against the run of play, as Radecki fired a shot on an odd-man rush into the right corner of the net with just over six minutes to play in the period.
Buffalo State held its 1-0 lead into the intermission despite a 17-6 advantage in shots on goal for the Red Dragons in the frame.
The Bengals added two goals in the span of 1:05 near the midway point of the second period, with Carlson firing a shot into the corner of the net on a 2-on-1 break and Radecki adding her second goal of the game after a scrum in front of the Cortland goal.
After the third goal, Cortland used its timeout and made a goaltending substitution to insert Deutz into the game for her second game of collegiate action.
Buffalo State committed a slashing penalty with 9:08 left in the period, and Cortland got back into the contest with a power-play goal only 33 seconds later. Mahoney made a pass from the right point in front of goal for a redirected shot by Delacourt that went just wide of the goal. Delacourt collected her own rebound behind the Buffalo State goal, and slipped a pass out front to Cook for a quick shot into the back of the net.
Shortly after, Cook scored her second power-play goal of the game to bring Cortland to within a goal at 3-2 with under six minutes left in the period, redirecting Aneborn's shot from the left faceoff circle past Todd, with Bertrand also providing the secondary assist on the goal.
Mahoney scored on another redirection on a shot by Aneborn from the left point, with Bertrand again providing the secondary assist, to even the score at 3-3 into the second intermission.
Cortland scored two times in 18 seconds to take a 5-3 lead early in the third period.
Deutz played the puck to Bertrand behind the Cortland goal, and Bertrand made a tape-to-tape pass to spring Diem on a breakaway down the right side. Diem's initial shot was saved by Todd, but knocked in her own rebound to give Cortland a 4-3 advantage.
Mahoney netted her second goal of the game shortly after, as
Ella Iwinski (Batavia, IL/New England College) sent a pass from the Cortland defensive zone to Aneborn down the left side. Aneborn slipped a pass to the middle of the ice to Mahoney, who fired a wrist shot into the top right corner of the goal.
Buffalo State pulled to within a goal with under three minutes remaining in the period on Carlson's second goal of the game. The Bengals then pulled their goalie for an extra attacker in the final minute, but Deutz came up with a pair of strong saves in the closing seconds to secure the come-from-behind victory.
