Red Dragon Men and Women Each Finish First at Cortland Pumpkin Relays

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland's men's and women's swimming and diving teams each finished first out of four teams at the Cortland Pumpkin Relays, hosted by the Red Dragons at Holsten Pool.
 
Cortland's men finished with 252 points. New Paltz was second with 195, followed by Brockport with 134 and Wells with 28. For the women, Cortland scored 229 points, New Paltz had 207, Brockport finished with 174 and Wells scored 44.
 
Cortland hosted the relay meet for the fourth straight season (2017-19, 2021-22). The event features an unorthodox format with many relays that are normally not held, including a number of three-swimmer events.
 
The Cortland men won eight races. Makiah Poli (Cortland/Home schooled), Kellen Dickman (Montgomery/Valley Central), Ethan Domanico (New Windsor/Newburgh Free Academy) and Sam Zani (Irondequoit) won the 400-yard medley relay (3:44.90) and the 200-yard medley relay (1:41.94). Mason Rowlands (CampbellHall/Washingtonville), Aiden Poli (Cortland/Home schooled), Domanico and Hunter Berhnardt (Groton) won the 650-yard freestyle relay (50/100/200/300 crescendo) in 5:54.58, and Mason Arnberg (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East), Hunter Sugrue-Neuendorf (Valley Cottage/Nyack) and Dickman won the 300-yard breaststroke (3:08.93).
 
Bernhardt, Lucas Gannon (Schenectady/Mohonasen), Patrick Kivlehan (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) and Lasse Bieder (Cologne, Germany/Apostelgymnasium Köln) took top honors in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:40.27) and Jake Bogen (Poughkeepsie/Spackenkill), (Aiden) Poli, Zani and Arnberg won the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:32.89). The trio of Zani, Dickman and Domanico won the 300-yard butterfly relay (2:48.59) and Arnberg, Nick Dambra (Brockport) and Dickman won the 300-yard IM relay (2:54.56). In addition, Lance Meeson (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) won both diving events with 255.85 points on the 1-meter board and 257.40 points on the 3-meter board.
 
Cortland's women won five races. Alayna Miller (Hilton), Emily Lantry (Massena/St. Lawrence), Madi Monaghan (Chili/Gates Chili) and Leah Bernhardt (Groton) won the 650-yard freestyle relay (50/100/200/300 crescendo) in 6:41.04. Lantry, Kaitlyn Devaney (Lynbrook) and Monaghan captured the 300-yard backstroke relay (3:10.28), while Mackenzie Dickman (Montgomery/Valley Central), Monaghan and Bernhardt won the 300-yard breaststroke relay (3:44.22).
 
The combination of Sophie Amering (Rochester/Hilton), Monaghan, Lantry and Bernhardt was victorious in the 800-yard freestyle relay (8:25.79), and the trio of Areiannah Martinez-Reyes (Queens/Benjamin Cardozo), Monaghan and Bernhardt won the 300-yard IM relay (3:19.94). Ashley Zachgo (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) placed first in both diving events. Her score of 254.50 points on the 1-meter board missed the NCAA regional qualifying standard by only half a point, and she registered a score of 251.15 points on the 3-meter board.
 
Cortland will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 1 p.m. when it travels to Ithaca for men's and women's dual meets.
