As an undergraduate, Anderson was a four-year varsity basketball starter at forward and led the team in scoring for three of those years. He was named First Team on the All-State Teachers College Team of 1939-40. He also played frosh football and was a two-year varsity starter in soccer.

After graduating from Cortland in 1940, Anderson earned his masters degree in 1947 from Syracuse University in physical education and Ed.D. in higher education also from Syracuse University in 1950.

Anderson was athletic director, coach and teacher at Gorham Central School from 1940-43 and in 1946. He was a Naval Officer from 1943-46 and participated in five combat launches. From 1947-51 Anderson was an instructor at Syracuse University and Associate Secretary of AAHPERI from 1951-74. He was executive vice president of the C-Club from 1974-80 and inducted into the Eden High School Hall of Fame in 1972.

Anderson has been honored with several district and state awards as well as having a room named for him at the AAHPERD headquarters. He was also listed in "Who's Who in America" from 1976 to 1993. Anderson and his wife, Jane, have two children.
