John Moiseichik came to Cortland in 1940 and was an immediate star in football and basketball. His undergraduate career was interrupted by a three year tour of duty with the Army Air Corps during World War II but he returned to Cortland and, in 1946, was presented the Red Letter Award as the most valuable player on the basketball team as a senior.

He began his teaching and coaching career in 1947 at Cortland High School and completed work on his master's degree in physical education at Syracuse University in 1948. He was presented with the first Distinguished Service Award as the "Outstanding Young Man of the Year," by the Cortland Jaycees in 1947. He was an outstanding football coach at Cortland High School for 20 years until he finally stepped down from that position in 1967. During that period his teams complied a 109-39-7 record. In addition to teaching duties at Cortland High, Moiseichik held the position of director of athletics.

Moiseichik played briefly for the Syracuse Nationals of the National Basketball League, averaging 1.8 points per game in nine appearances during the 1946-47 season.

UPDATE: Moiseichik passed away on April 16, 2016 at the age of 95.
